I think it's time to reboot the series already -- the last installment was hella lame.

Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi are looking to spin more webs for Sony's Columbia Pictures.

The actor and helmer are said to be close to locking in a deal to return for the fourth and fifth installments of the studio's top-grossing "Spider-Man" franchise, with Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad producing.

In hopes of containing costs, Columbia is considering shooting the films back-to-back starting in fall 2009, much like New Line did with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which filmed simultaneously for 274 days. Ziskin had said she would like to aim for a May 2011 release for "Spider-Man 4," nine years after the original movie's debut.

Jamie Vanderbilt ("Zodiac") is writing the screenplay.

"Spider-Man" is Sony's most successful movie franchise; the first three films have grossed $2.5 billion worldwide.

Although there has been speculation whether Maguire would return to play Peter Parker, the studio said there was no question he would be back.

"The studio never considered any other actor. Tobey was our only choice and the only person we've discussed the role with," Sony spokesman Steve Elzer said.

Both Maguire and Raimi are repped by CAA.

The studio declined comment on what villains might appear in the next two films or whether Kirsten Dunst would reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson, though it is hoped she will follow Maguire's lead and return.

Sony also has stepped up developing the "Spider-Man" spinoff "Venom," first recruiting writer Jacob Estes to draft a script and most recently bringing in scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who penned "Zombieland" for the studio.

Topher Grace played Venom in "Spider-Man 3," but it's unclear whether Sony would cast him for the "Venom" feature or bring in new talent.

too early to reboot. you need at least 4, preferably 5 or more movies to reboot.

The biggest issue with Spiderman 3 was that they put too many villains in it with very little character development. Venom should have been in a dedicated movie. The whole builtup ego that Peter was portraying was also a little unbecoming of the character.

That and the whole emo thing was unrealistic, as far as the Spidey plot went...the dancing and the "cool clothes" and all that, it was just super lame. I can see getting bit by a spider, but dancing around like that was just stupid.

And Vin Diesel should have been cast as venom :|

Like Titanic, I never understood what was so special about those movies. They were mediocre action flicks; not bad, but not great. Sometimes I wonder if the makers of certain movies, like Titanic, sold their souls to the devil and I am the only one immune to the mind-fuk. I wondered this when Bush was reelected too, but now I know that the devil really was involved in that..

It must suck going through life seeing everything as bland and mediocre.

Ya, cause that's what I said. Titanic and Spiderman combined constitute 'everything'; it must suck going through life having such a limited perspective.

Do they really need more? Yes I think Venom should have been in a whole movie with spiderman by himself. Eric Foreman was not a good choice for that role. I really didn't enjoy part 3 like I did the first 2.

That's an awfully long delay. Don't let the actors get old, for god's sake!

Spider-Man 1 and 2 were brilliant. Three blew ass because it went down the original Batman path with multiple enemies and to many one dimensional characters. Emo-Peter was fvcking lame and the Gwen Stacy arc was utterly useless as well. I hope they fix it the next time around.

I'm with you. I wasn't crazy about the last Spidy, but it was light years better than Batman with George Clooney.

seconded!

SpidermanIII was easily the worst of the trilogy, but it was still way better than watching Arnold make all those lame cold puns.

Screw Venom. It's time to bring out Carnage.

carnage is a bad ma-focka

IF they did a true Carnage movie or hell even Venom movie it would be rated R for gore.

but man it would be great.

That was the main problem.
