I will be going back to my parents soon, after 4 more exams. They have a P1GHz and a P500MHz which I will get going. I'll leave my computer here running throughout the holidays so it should ramp up production a little (right now I turn it off at night, because it's beside my bed). I think we need everybody to make an all-out push if we are going to stay ahead of DSLR.

Excellent news, teriba! :)

I'm debating whether to leave my computer on while I'm away from the dorms for the holiday break. The only reason to keep it on is to crunch for SETI and the TeAm, which is a pretty good reason, but there are a lot of negatives:

1. My CPU fan died once before, and I wouldn't want it to die while I'm away.
2. This computer produces a LOT of heat, and the windows and door would be closed for nearly a month, so it could cause some damage to the computer.
3. It could start a fire, or God knows what else, while I'm gone, and that wouldn't be cool.

Any advice? Otherwise, I'll be pretty much going MIA for a month. :frown:

Glad to hear it, if we all do little things like this, it will add up to a large amount :)

I think it will be okay to leave it on over the holidays. It's a brand new computer and it's been running for about 2 months now, so I don't think anything will fail on it. If it does cause a fire, that's what insurance is for:D

Cool!

If you are going to keep it running I would put it out in the open incase it does catch fire.

Trust me they won't let you leave anything on when you leave for the break. Too much of a fire hazard. When I was in school a year ago they were pretty thurough on making sure that everything was unplugged be fore you could leave.

Here is an idea though, why don't you take it with you? I can't immagine leaving my computer alone for more than a day let alone the 4 weeks of semester break. I always took mine with me it wasn't that much of a burden.

Good luck on the assimilations.

unless it will void your warrenty I would open the case up. Also I would try to crack the window just a little bit, but I don't think thats too important especially if you open the case up. Personally I would taake it home though, but if you have to leave it for some reason thats what I would do.

I don't know if you are talking to me or Logix, but here's my plan.

I live in a house, not in rez, so there is plenty of airflow.
I will shut down my ftp server and crank up the firewall.
I will move the computer into the middle of the room.

Really, there shouldn't be any problems. Servers do this all the time without problems.

i agree, take it with you!

how are you going to be able to play all the games or look at all your favourites when the computer is sitting in the middle of a room somewhere over the holidays!

Great to hear about the extra computers you will be assimilating :D
