What's odd is they won't do the same for homosexual male couples.

NYC changes birth certificate policy for lesbians

Posted: March 25, 2009 - 1:28 PM

NEW YORK (AP) -- Married lesbian couples in New York City can now be listed as parents on birth certificates as soon as their children are born.

Before, the women would have to go through an adoption process to be listed as the official parents.

The city Board of Health voted Tuesday to make the change.

The state made a similar move in December, after a court ruling and a directive from Gov. David Paterson ordered state agencies to respect out-of-state gay marriages.

The city says married male couples still will need to adopt their children in order to be officially declared their parents.

I think they can do it for the women...cause well it has to come out of a woman right?

and there are a lot of unknown fathers out there, so a male name is not always needed

but when there are two guys, they baby won't be coming out of either of them, and there is a known mother so she would have to get her name on the certificate

not exactly. the baby could have been born of the guy's sperm in the homosexual male couple's case.

i think if they do it for a female couple, they should allow it for a male couple.

The moment the child can grow inside a man it will change.

Um... men can bear children now? 😕
you don't think men are half of the equation?

Not when we can't carry them to term.

Plus 2 lesbians = hotter then 2 men so the lawmakers look the other way on that.

Why does there only have to be two parents? Why can't a baby be "born to" a community of people who are all listed as parents on the birth certificate?

Who do they put on the certificate for adoptions? The natural parents? I think the natural parents should be on the certificate in any case. Whoevers DNA make's up the child should be on the certificate.

Well if you are somehow getting the genetics from more then 2 people something has gone wrong somewhere. 😉

i think it's impossible for two guys.... it's easier for two women because the egg could come from one woman, while the other woman gave birth? then technically the kid have 2 mom and one dad.....

this is stupid
the genetic parents should be on the birth certificate - how else will you know who your real parent is? your adopted parents could lie to you since there's no documented proof that they aren't your real parents...

Yeah, the difference is pretty clear and logical.
what if the egg was donated?

i am talking biological parent, and that is why the gay male couple could contain the biological father. he's should have just as much right.

But now a person who did not contribute any genetics can be on the birth certificate. Why not 10 other people? 100? 1000?

The people who raise you are your parents. I have friends who are adopted and they don't go out searching for their birth parents; they just accept their adopted parents as the only ones they have - which is what's intended.

Mosh is just worried what wil happen if both names appear on the birth certificate when she goes to split from her "significant" other.

This goes back a bit - things may have changed - but when our oldest child was born in New York, we weren't married. I was the mother obviously, but they wouldn't allow my significant other to put his name on the birth certificate. We had to go through the courts to do that.

Our next child was born in NJ. NJ insists that the mother has to put a father's name on the birth certificate, so that they can get him to pay support (that's what the registrar in Englewood said).

We got around to getting married for the two after that.
