What started as small talk between two LSU students concerned about a physics exam ended with police issuing warrants for their arrests.

In May, Peter J. Klein, 22, and Andrew M. Ranson, 21, casually talked about breaking into their physics professor?s office to get a copy of the final exam, the arrest warrants say.

The warrants, issued Monday, give the following account of the May 11 incident:

Klein and Ranson?s small talk allegedly led to Ranson crawling through the ceiling of Nicholson Hall about midnight, dropping down into the office of Professor Dubravka Rupnik and retrieving the Physics 2101 final exam.

Ranson slid the test under the office door to Klein, who went to LSU?s Middleton Library to make a copy of the test. Klein then slid the original back under the door to Ranson, who took about 15 minutes to crawl back through the ceiling tiles.

The next day, Rupnik noticed scuff marks on her office wall and reported the break-in to LSU Police.

Using information on test grades provided by LSU academic officials, LSU Police focused on Klein and Ranson because their grades on the final exam were higher than the average score of all the students.

The students later told investigators they studied for six hours before throwing away the copy of the final exam.

University officials said that although the two students admitted to the break-in, Klein and Ranson had not been arrested as of late Tuesday.

Maj. Lawrence Rabalais, an LSU Police spokesman, said police had to investigate other leads before arresting the men.

As of late Tuesday, Rabalais said, police were in the process of again contacting Klein and Ranson and were expected to arrest them soon.

Ranson faces a charge of unauthorized entry of a place of business; Klein is wanted for principal to unauthorized entry of a place of business, the warrants say...

Thought I would share this. :D

I would have to think that they probably left a lot of physical evidence behind. No reason to tack on another charge for lying in an investigation.

Evidence? If they had finger prints or something, wouldn't they have just thrown that at them in the first place?

You'll probably have fingerprints and/or DNA evidence. I can't imagine someone crawling through a narrow space for 15 minutes both ways without leaving one piece of evidence behind.

The biggest problem is what do you do with this evidence? It isn't like the university has a DNA record of all the students just in case a crime happens. No. You have to compare the evidence to your suspect's fingerprints/DNA. To do that comparison, you usually first need a suspect.

Even the threat of physical evidence should be enough to bring out a confession in anyone who wants to minimize jail time.

If they were going to leave scuff marks they should have at least taken a dump in her desk drawer while they were there.

that is assuming they were not wearing gloves and a stocking ski mask. i mean seriously if they were that smart to figure out how to break in... you'd think they would wear gloves.

Footprints are just as good to track you with, never mind the potential of cutting yourself and bleeding your DNA all over the place.

Use shoes, just don't be such a huge no0b like these two guys. :p

You are going to crawl for 15 minutes each way without a hair falling out, or fibers from your ski mask coming loose? Heck, the campus is probably crawling with cameras so I bet they could know who was out walking at midnight.

Not like the police are going to go to that much trouble for this crime, but still, to say no evidence is left behind is far stretch. These aren't geniuses, they needed to steal a test to do well.

Nonono, you see, you have to shave yourself completely, preferably Nair bath. Then, have a friend use something of butter-knife sharpness to scrape all of your skin so that none falls off. Then, put on a full body wetsuit, rubber gloves ( no laces!), and rubber boots. Also put on a shower cap, and cover your face with something. Then, spray everything with Lysol liberally. Bingo! You're ready to infiltrate.

All of you are over-thinking this. If the intruder had only worn NON MARKING SOLE SHOES, they wouldn't have gotten caught.

Not really. Sounds like a general course for students who aren't required to take high level classes... or the total opposite... but either way, general.

Shouldn't have admitted to it. They had no real evidence. People are too easily intimidated by police.
