What started as small talk between two LSU students concerned about a physics exam ended with police issuing warrants for their arrests.
In May, Peter J. Klein, 22, and Andrew M. Ranson, 21, casually talked about breaking into their physics professor?s office to get a copy of the final exam, the arrest warrants say.
The warrants, issued Monday, give the following account of the May 11 incident:
Klein and Ranson?s small talk allegedly led to Ranson crawling through the ceiling of Nicholson Hall about midnight, dropping down into the office of Professor Dubravka Rupnik and retrieving the Physics 2101 final exam.
Ranson slid the test under the office door to Klein, who went to LSU?s Middleton Library to make a copy of the test. Klein then slid the original back under the door to Ranson, who took about 15 minutes to crawl back through the ceiling tiles.
The next day, Rupnik noticed scuff marks on her office wall and reported the break-in to LSU Police.
Using information on test grades provided by LSU academic officials, LSU Police focused on Klein and Ranson because their grades on the final exam were higher than the average score of all the students.
The students later told investigators they studied for six hours before throwing away the copy of the final exam.
University officials said that although the two students admitted to the break-in, Klein and Ranson had not been arrested as of late Tuesday.
Maj. Lawrence Rabalais, an LSU Police spokesman, said police had to investigate other leads before arresting the men.
As of late Tuesday, Rabalais said, police were in the process of again contacting Klein and Ranson and were expected to arrest them soon.
Ranson faces a charge of unauthorized entry of a place of business; Klein is wanted for principal to unauthorized entry of a place of business, the warrants say...
