turn on car, select defrost, turn fan all the way up

periodically chip away at ice as car warms (plastic coat hanger if no ice scraper)

Do this. It'll go faster than you think.

He's got it... Learned this my first day in Baltimore. It was a bitter lesson because I didn't learn it until later that day.

Warm salt water.

Salt is not good for metal though. But it will keep it from freezing again and help it melt faster. If you wash away the salt water once it's done it should be fine.

(for next time)

Ok I tried the defroster + picking the ice method but it took way too long.

I tried pouring water on it, and it was a little bit faster.

Then I started beating the car with the kettle and the ice just cracked everywhere. All I had to do was pick huge pieces out like scabs.

Overall I'd have to say it was a fun experience... 🙂

Picking scabs is gross....

I'm in Austin and we had the ice storms the past few days. I just used a hammer and carefully tapped the ice till it cracked and fell off in chunks.

It also helps to turn on your car/defrost at full blast like which will slwoly melt away the ice, makingi t easier to hammer.

You should know where you're going.

😉 Us northerners are already very adept to driving while looking through a thoroughly iced windshield.

2" of ice? Did you pour water on the windshield and let it freeze? Or 2" of snow/ice?

Another vote for car defroster + A/C (drier air) + ice scraper.

 Very true!

crouch down and look through the bottom of the windshield. One trick is to cover the windshield with cardboard, old mats or whatever when you park the car.. Peel them off when you are ready to go.

I need a 3" X 5" opening in the front windshield, I guess I suck at life.

Got a solid 1/2" of ice up here in southern NH....

Ice Tomb

I let the car warm up with the defroster on, and turned on the rear defroster. After awhile, it melts enough to get off with a scraper or just your gloved hand. We have generally have things like scrapers in our cars this time of year..

You can use hot water, but you do risk a crack if you aren't careful...

Park it in sunlight, assuming there isn't thick cloud cover. That should heat the inside of the car, and by the end of the day, the ice should either be falling off on its own, or else be easier to chip off.

That might work...albeit slowly. However, that really depends on how dark of a paint color it is, and the temperature outside. It was 3F this morning, went "up" to 14, then back down to 0F tonight...I could leave my car in the sun for a week in that temperature before much happened...😉
