Two DVD drives and one Cd Drive...what's wrong?

For some reason windows is picking up two DVD drives and a CD drive.

I only have 1 CD drive and 1 DVD drive. What's up?

Also i have a second harddrive at 160gb but it's only picking up 127. How can i fix this?
 
is it possible the extra dvd is a software drive? do you have some program like Alcohol 120% installed?

if you're running XP, you need service pack 2 to allow the extra capacity of the drive to be used

 
Yeah, it's probably a virtual drive used by your cd/dvd burning software.

It's SP1 that supports larger drives.

Now does anyone know how i get windows to read 160gb of space? thanks. =D

So you guys are saying i have to somehow uninstall SP2 to get windows to see 160gb?
Isn't SP2 suppose to be better though?
 
You will need to install sp1 or sp2 for windows to be able to see that extra space.
This should really be done straight after you install windows, and just before you load the chipset drivers.

If either sp is installed, then let us know

 
Welps. I think i already have SP2 because i have automatic updates on. Unless automatic updates doesnt dl the service packs. Any other suggestions?

windows key and pause/break key at same time.

See what it tells you there. Look out for the special wording - 'SPx'

I'm thinking you mean the Alt key? I tried that and it brought up system properties. According to those properties i only have microsoft windows xp. Could this be it?
 
bottom left, next to the ctrl key.

press and hold the ????? key, and then press the pause/break key - top of keyboard next to scroll lock at end of function buttons
 
He was trying to get you to use the hotkey shortcut to View System Information.
You should see something like below at the top of the System Properties General tab window:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Then it will say Registered to:
Blah
Blah
Blah

Then it will say Computer:
Blah
Blah
Blah


That is what mine says.

If you only have the original XP, then yes, this is your problem.

You may have an old keyboard that doesn't have the 2 Windows keys. They should be to the left and right of your left and right alt keys. Mine actually have the Windows logo on them. Pressing either one of them is the same as clicking on the Start button, for example. They can be used for all sorts of shortcuts.

Sorry about earlier. I was pressing the right key. I have a Logitech elite keyboard so my windows key is a combination of alt, option, and start. heh

And i believe you guys are right about the Service Pack 2. I dont have either. I tired to install it but it said my CD key is not valid. =\

I couldnt find my original CD key from the initial build so i had to find one through a friend. I do have it right now but i dont know how to change the CD key. Any suggestions? I really dont feel like installing all this software again. =\
 
There are some programs you can get that will change your CD Key, although those are about as legal as keygens and if you purchased Windows you probably don't want to do that. Did you purchase Windows or use a corporate edition key (fckgw-rhqq2 is blocked, as a friend of mine knows)
 
Welps...i guess i can do a fresh install and slipstream it with my original cd key? I believe that's what they call it. But knowing how lazy i am. It's probably going to take me forever to get around to doing it.

yeah...., Preti9cboi, the cd key you are using is indeed an illegal one. shh.... =D no one needs to know. But FYI, you do need to find another cd-key that will work with SP2 because the one you are using is on the ban list. =)
 
I'm probably going to reinstall and i was wondering.

Since i have two harddrives, can i just install the OS on one hard drive and put everything else such as music and documents the other hard drive? Will this prevent them from being deleted during the OS install?
 
Yes, you can do that.

A lot of people partition one hard drive for that purpose, but 2 separate drives is safer.

If you install any games or other programs on the second hard drive, you will likely have to reinstall them if the main drive needs to be formatted or replaced. They would no longer be in the windows registry. The other files should be fine.
