Two different memory types...

I recently purchased a new notebook and it comes with 4 memory slots all populated with 2GB ddr3 dimms. I am planning on upgrading the notebook to 16GB. In order to keep the warranty I need to take it to an authorized service dealer because the 4th dimm slot is under the keyboard.

I want to check the new memory and was wondering if having that factory installed dimm with my new ones would cause errors to show up with memtest because of the different speed, timings and voltages?

You should be fine. Laptop memory isn't quite like desktop memory. They should all run at the same voltage, 1.5V in the case of DDR3. If you can find out what memory you have now, you should be able to find the same elsewhere if you like. Check ewiz.com, they sell memory made by Samsung, Infineon, etc., like what you find in most OEM systems.

Ya there's 3 underneath and one under the keyboard. You can replace the 3 underneath but the keyboard one voids the warranty if you do it.

ASUS brand specifically this model G73JW-A1.

I just ordered the EXACT same thing

It's annoying that one of the RAM slots isn't really accessible (at least easily), though on the other hand, so long as the RAM doesn't die, realistically I'm not going to need more than 8GB during it's lifespan. (And could probably go to 12GB anyway without accessing the 4th slot.) I only use up to 60% of my 4GB (though of course Windows would be using the rest for things). I'm certainly not opposed to having 8, but considering typically my running programs are only eating 50-60% of 4GB...

Of course at one point 512MB felt INCREDIBLY spacious to me, so...

four memory slots in a notebook? never seen that before.
