Two different CPU temp readings

This has been bugging me for the past month. Using the "upgraded" heatsink I got with my 1.333 Ghz cpu and a7v-133 motherboard, the temp reading with asus probe sometimes reached as high as 69C. That was fixed by employing a box fan, and buying some cheap termal grease. Still, asus probe was reporting up to 62C. I also tried a chrome orb which produced similar temps to the stock heatsink. I went to 2cooltek.com and ordered a Thermaltake SK6 with a delta fan. I also got some nice artic silver II grease. so I put my computer together, making sure I followed the directions on articsilver.com and everything, and I load up ASUS Probe. The temperature is still at 57C idle. 60C under load. Needless to say I was rather pissed. I went to download.com and downloaded a generic cpu sensor program called Hmonitor. the cpu temp now reads 50C under load. Any ideas what is going on? I'm still not done with my case mods, so I think I can probably lower the temp a couple more degrees, but 60C is way too hot.

Sounds like you don't have a good fit between your processor and heatsink. Did you remove the thermal pad completely and clean the heatsink surface with a NON petroleum based cleaner (use acetone steal Mom or Sis's or the wifes nail polish remover. Clean off any thermal grease or Artic Silver you used according to the makers directions. Apply a blob of Artic silver about the size of a grain or two of rice to the top of the processor spread it using a business card or folder paper. Do the same to the area on the heatsink that will contact the processor (be sure to cover a little extra length and width to be sure). Reconnect HS and fan and you are done! My system 1.33 with a thermallake II and 7000 Rpm Delta fan (it was a option) run at 39C with a 33C Case temp.
You are going to hear all kinds of numbers around this because of the variation in sensors, room temps, case temps, etc. I hope this helps. Go to the Artic Silver site for photos of this method.

Good Luck

Hrm, well I thought I applied it correctly, although I used isopropyl alcohol instead of acetone. I will try again probably tomorrow. Right now I am kinda a little busy and don't want to rush things. Thanks for your suggestions. I'm just wondering what the heck is up with the asus temperature probe. hmonitor's readings seem to match the BIOS's readings too. I think I'm blaming ASUS Probe for all those sleepless nights.
