The only problem is that Apple does not sell premium products. The hardware is basically the same (unlike the tired example of BMW vs Honda where almost everything is different), and the cases are not any bit better in the long run.
The operating system isn't any bit better, either. It crashes just as much if not more than XP, and far more than Vista. And FFS, one of my biggest peeves about using it is the fact that you cannot right click in an unfocused window! Whose idea was that? For example, if you have Firefox and Excel open side-by-side and copy something from Firefox, you have to first click on the Word window before you can right click in there! Have they fixed that yet? I've been fortunate enough to not use OSX since Tiger.
That's comparing apples to oranges. Even if we take out looks, a lexus has tons of features that a civic doesn't.
Better seat materials, sounds system, tires, brakes, tinting. Generally the ergonomics of more expensive cars are better, the ride is quieter etc.
If he was comparing a netbook to a Macbook Pro I would agree, but that isn't the case here. The only difference is that one has better aesthetics. If someone prefers OSX to windows then by all means buy a Macbook, but don't pretend that differences in base and luxury cars is the same as differences between laptops with the same specs.

He made a mistake. The MacBook Pro 15" has both a 9400M (shared VRAM) and a 9600M (dedicated VRAM). The first for lower power consumption, and the second for better performance.
However I do agree that Macs are generally overpriced. Furthermore, Apple as a rule will come up with at least one stupid or pointless feature to add/omit to each of their products, testing your resolve to stick with them. With the MacBook it's the lack of FireWire. With the Mini it's the 1 GB of RAM on the low end. On the 24" LED display, it's the extremely short cable and obscure connector. On the MacBook Pro, it's the use of ExpressCard/34 instead of 54 for whatever reason.

Whats with everyone saying that the quality of Macs is better? Ive read numerous stories of people having shitty Macs all the time. One guy I read about had to return his new Mac laptop like 3 times before getting a good one. PLUS THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS NUTS! A IBM Thinkpad or a nice Dell is going to be just as sturdy and comes with better tech help. PERIOD!

Heh, I always wondered that too... one of the computer labs I used to go to had G5s with 20" LCDs on one side and Dells with 17" LCDs permanently set to 1024x768 on the other, and the Dells were always taken.
I prefer Windows and I think Macs are overpriced but come ON, know a good thing when you see it!
Your friend wants a mac - let him get a mac. A dell won't satisfy him if he likes the design of the hardware and software of a mac, and he'll just resent you for forcing him into a purchase he didn't want.
I'm multi-os myself, with 2 pcs and 3 macs - they all work well and, unless you're a "creative professional," it's really all about personal preference. If your friend is a designer/video editor, he absolutely should go with a mac, mainly because of the osx only apps

Yes, that's an important consideration. If you work faster/better under one OS than another, then you should stick to it. That's the case with my mom. She's been using Macs since I was very little. Technically she doesn't need the Mac OS (all she really needs are Illustrator and Photoshop), but she is not really a computer person and she needs the familiarity of a Mac.
What bothers me is when Mac fanboys go nuts with saying everyone should have a Mac and Windows gives you viruses and so on. It's just so not true. But fanboys of any kind annoy me.
What's very odd is that, while the adobe suite is available for Windows, it just seems to work better under OS X. Of course I'm stuck with CS3 on the pC under XP, maybe CS4 works better.
There's a heritage involved with a lot of occupations - it's hard to explain but our lead designer where I work swears by her mac, and she's no fanboy. It just works for her. The interns are forced to use illustrator under windows and consider it punishment.
I edit in Final Cut pro and am certified for it, but can also kick ass under Vegas and Premiere. I came from a pc background and you simply can't get a video editing gig with Premiere and Vegas on your resume - you need to know FCP (though Avid is still viable), it's really that simple.
But I'm a born tinkerer - you can't tinker with a mac! I love hacking/tweaking/upgrading playing with my PCs but I haven't done any serious work with it in years. I know I can, there are great apps out there for both platforms...
I'm ranting, but I'll end this mini-rant with a big thumbs up for Windows 7. I'm a beta tester and adore it, especially on my homebuilt media center. I'm glad that the mistakes made in vista were resolved and the positive emphasized.
The guy who made up that webpage is obviously Windows-biased. Firefox 3 is open platform yet he gives the Windows version a heart and the Linux/OSX version checks? And he's obviously never heard of Adium...

I refuse to buy Apple products of any sort. They take the idea of closed source to a whole different level that makes MS look positively Linux like in comparison. Speaking of Linux, if I'm going to use a non compatible O/S, it'll be Linux. I can tweak that how I want, and put it on any hardware I choose to.
Meh. I gave up nerdish pursuits like that when I started to get laid.
Companies are in it to make money, I don't see how Apple is doing anything wrong - especially since they're not forcing you to buy anything.. Computers are tools - use the best one to get the job done.... Don't take anything like this personally..And go out there tonight, some bar.. Buy a lady a drink, chat her up, and be a kind human being to her - maybe you too will get laid then. In fact, I know you'll get laid, I have faith in you!
