Two Dead Power Supplies - Unsure of Cause

Considering the location of the smell, it sounds like the short is actually on the MB, perhaps at the 24 pin connection.
All power supplies must be shorted and not damaged. In fact, Intel even says how thick the shorting wire must be. Short together all power supply outputs and the supply must not be damaged - as was standard long before the original IBM PC existed. So why would a shorted motherboard cause a supply failure? It wouldn't.
