Hi
I plan on getting DSL. I understand that it come with a DSL modem and connects to my Network card. I have a second computer in the next room with a Network card. Is there a way (that is not too complicated) to connect them to share the DSL line with just the existing Network cards that are in each computer ?

If you are using Windows 98SE, ME, or 2000 you can use Internet Connection sharing. You will need two NICs in your primary computer. One connects to the ADSL modem, the other connects to your second computer. This is the easiest way to do it, but there are many other (proxy servers, cable/dsl routers, etc)

Here is the prescription.
1 DSL Modem
1 Network hub
1 NIC in each computer

Here is how I am running 4 computers sharing the DSL modem:
I run the DSL modem line into one of the ports on the hub, then plug the other 4 from their nic, straight to the hub. If your modem came with a crossover cable, you need to replace it with a straight cable. This is easiest done if you have a dynamic ip. You can let internet explorer automatically configure proxy settings and it should fire right up. For networking, follow the instructions that came with the nic, but you will generally need the following in network properties:
Client for Microsoft networks
Client for Netware networks
IPX/SPX compatible protocol
Net BEUI protocol
TCP/IP protocol
File and Print sharing, if desired.
Be sure in properties under identification, that you name your workgroup something unique on both systems.
You will have to reboot a few times as you change and add protocols. Also, if you enable sharing, you need to look at the properties of each drive you wish to share and make sure sharing is enabled for each drive.
Done right, a network is pretty neat. :)

Here's the easy way if the modem connects via a diffent method than EtherNet like USB, make a cross over cable and string it to the other computer, Enable DNS on both, with unique IP Address set the second computers gateway to the IP of the first. This should work. If I'm in the right state of mind>>>

i'm running 3 systems off a hub like steve"compuwiz" and it rocks, no troubles at

be careful about file and printer sharing because people can get into your systems fairly easy with adsl or cable!!put a password on your connections if you enable the 2!!!

I just got a UGate-3200 (Cable/ADSL modem sharing gateway/firewall)from Maxgate. It has quite a few nice features.

-Integrated High Speed internet Gateway and 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch. 7 ports/uplink/and WAN(to modem)
-Configured thru Browser.
-DHCP Server and client Support.
-Firewall Protection- All incoming data packets are monitored and all incoming server requests are filtered. Thus, you network is protected from outside intruders.
-Security Access Control-The Admistrator can limit the internet access of any LAN IP addresses or deny any Internet requests to any particular port (ie- Internet access to computer in Kids room can be turned on and off).

I'm very pleased. Check em out atMaxgate.net
