ah i see. i'll look into a router. didnt know routers were so cheap these days. I was hoping in the lines of a quick fix (like something from RadioShack) that will let my desktop to access the net today. But no need to buy a crossover cable if thats just more complicated. I guess i'll tough it out today and buy a router for the next time i work from home!

ICS really isn't all that bad. My only problem with it was a setting in my firewall that took me far too long to find. Both my PCs are always on, so that's not an issue at all for me.

Problem is that you need two NICs in your main PC (the one connected to the cable modem) and you need some software to facilitate ICS. Windows XP comes with it but if you are running an older version of Windows say Win2k on the laptop or, god forbid, Win98 or WinME you might as well forget about it.

Get a router. Much easier to set up and more secure.

Agreed. When my mom got a cable modem I insisted that she invest in a NAT router.

i agree with everyone who's mentioned getting a router. it's so cheap and you get the added benefit of a hardware firewall. in the future you can network many more, easily. plus, you have wifi!

Yep, just buy yourself a router. I used to have a linux router going but decided it wasn't worth it and bought a linksys router and it worked perfectly for a long time (I have since sold it and it definitley got it's money's worth out of it)

I'm sure this has been said but you can get a hub and an additional IP address from your ISP.

Please take it from who's been there. No ICS, crossover cables, hubs and switches - that was three years ago. A Linksys/Netgear/SMC/Dlink router is what you need.
