I think this is pertaining to the OS more than the phone.

On a Samsung J1, I would like to find out how to do the following:

1.) When a cell signal is not present, have phone NOT drain the battery. My old non smartphone had a setting to only search hard if 911 call. I assume there is a setting somewhere.

2.) When connected to certain WiFi access points, choose to NOT update apps. Example; at home, I have a great internet speed, so the phone will not harm my connection. It can do what it wants. At work we have a very fragile, hardly operating internet, and any download of any kind (even 10MB apps) will cause performance problems with our EPR system. I do use the wifi at lunch though when nobody is using the erp system.

I think for #2, you go into Google Play store settings, to disable auto-update of apps.

1. Airplane mode. Go to the phone settings and look for the symbol of an airplane. Turning it on disables all radios on the phone, like BT, wifi and cell.
2. like bolomite said in google play store, in settings for google play store, disable auto update of apps. Then just update your apps manually at home.

WOW!
What kind of office do you work at that allows people to connect to their wireless network that is already so crappy that it even comprises functionality of it's ERP software?

Ok to elaborate on #1 question, I am aware I can pick airplane mode. I need to be more clear, if I up front know there is no service, I can do this. What I want to do is by default not have the phone waste battery trying to maintain a signal when one does not exist, as in I am unfamiliar with the area, by the time I realize the battery is at 15%, its too late. On the old dumbphones there was a setting that you can enable low power mode when no svc, with exception to 911 calls. This is what I am after.

On my lg chocolate touch when it went into a bad area a little box would show up "Power saving mode".
