Test Setup:
Both computers were benchmarked with all available windows updates for Windows Vista Home Premium x64 (as of 8-12-09), along with the newest drivers from ATI (as of 8-12-09). I wouldn't say they're overpriced(talking notebooks not desktops here :) )... at least not after the recent price drop. I just got my M17 in a week ago. The upgrades are very much a rip off though.

I paid $1,402 shipped/no tax. I ordered it with the cheapest processor, ram, and HDD...but I added the 4850's, an Intel 5300, and the backlit keyboard.

Then I bought a Q9100 for $280 and did the NB heatsink mod to stop the stuttering. I have it running at 2.72GHz LinX stable for 20+ passes.

I've also bought the 4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 w/heatspreaders(a bit overpriced...but nice) and a 64GB SSD + a 320GB Scorpio Black. For a laptop it screams.

So when it's all said and done I paid about $1,900 for everything. Pretty good deal if you ask me...at least for a high end notebook... :)

How did you get that pricing? The cheapest price for the M17 is 1,099 and the ATI 4850 is a $500 upgrade. Putting it to $1,599 without shipping. That doesn't include the $50 charge for the backlit keyboard or the $50 for the Intel 5300.

When I ordered it was $400 for the 4850's instead of $500 and I'm in the military so I ordered through aafes.com Basically free shipping/no tax and a very small discount. They also had a $100 off coupon for orders placed on July 28th/29th... just got lucky I guess... Even w/o the discounts I think it's a decent deal as long as you don't load it up with upgrades from Alienware.

Oh and the backlit KB and 5300 were only $25 each when I bought it... Gotta hate it when prices go back up...

Nice, then you really did get a good deal. It's not too surprising that the prices are going up a little bit. With the upswing in sales for the back-to-school people...they can bump the prices a little and then offer these "discounts" and come out on top. Good business model :D

I got my quad core 17" notebook back in May and I'm so glad I did! It's nice to have something powerful that is still portable.

I agree bud... now I'm just trying to resist buying a QX9300 for it... The Q9100 even stock is plenty for pretty much everything...

With the 4850's stock and the Q9100 @ 2.72GHz I get real close to 10k in Vantage (about P9,900)... I'm thinking about flashing the 4850's to somewhere around 575/900ish but there is really no need except for benching... I'm also going to flash it with the OCZ bios... with the northbridge chipset mod there really is no need for AW's B14 bios...that was supposed to help stuttering with quads but of course it didn't really help... Alienware needs to get a f'ing clue...or they already have one but they just don't care. :) I've also got an X9100 sitting here but I think I'll sell it and keep the Q9100...or sell both and get the QX...
