Two 74 G Raptors - more cooling needed?

Hi everyone! I'm planning to put together my first PC. I got some comments on the outline the other day which was great, thanks all!

Since then I have read a bit more about RAID & think it might be better for what I'm doing to get two 74 Gb Raptors instead and not have RAID. But I understand these run much hotter than the normal 7200 rpm drives I was looking at before.

I am looking at putting them in a Thermaltake Armour black steel case with the stock fans plus a Zalman CNPS7700-CU.

In there with them will be an Antec TruePower 2.0 550W (ver 2) PSU, AMD X2 4400+, ASUS A8N-SLI-Premium motherboard, 2 Gig of OCZ DDR2 dual channel RAM, an ASUS EN7800GTX, and a LG 'super multi' DVDRW.

Do you think this will be enough cooling? If not, what would you recommend?

Hope someone can halp me with this!

Cheers, Malic

I have never used HDD coolers, BUT I hear that the raptors do put out more heat, I think because you have a armor and the armor has fans that aim at cooling the HDD, you should be fine.

I might recommend that if they feel hot to you put the on the top of the armor cause you don;t want the raptors to super heat the air coming in to meet the rest of your hardware and already be hot from the HDDs.

Thats...interesting. heh. I just recently got a new antec hd cooler from staples for free(we wont get into that). I havnt been able to try it yet, but it looks like it should help. I need my damn video card to come so I can boot my computer. 😛

A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939

Whoa! Wait a minute! Did anyone catch this?

Malic, mah man. You need to do some more research before you order your parts. Part of the finesse of this computer-building business is "the budget:" avoid spending money where there is at least some certainty that you will lose some of it to no end.

2 Gig of OCZ DDR2 dual channel RAM

correct me if I am wrong but at present time regular DDR out performs the DDR2....hhmmmm

From what I understand, yes. Significantly so.

Whatever you do don't get DDR2 for that system it won't work.

Athlon 64s only support DDR1.

As for cooling I Have 2 36G raptors and a 300G DM10 in my Lian Li PC65 without any additional cooling and its fine.

Wow, thanks guys!! I had read that the low latency DDR2 gives some performance benefits, but looking back the tests were all on Intel ... and now I see why, AMD won't support DDR2 until M2!

😱 that will teach me to look more carefully.

Thanks again!

I haven't read extensively on the matter, but from what I understand the newer DDR2 offerings are closing the gap.

OP: HD's have a built-in tolerance for heat, just like MOSFET's and GDDR. As long as the drives aren't mounted right next to each other, without any sort of air passing over and through them, you shouldn't have a problem. Having said this, I think it's perfectly okay to cool the hell out of them using whatever means you want. 🙂

You will be just fine w/ 2 rap's in the TT Armor. Very little airflow is required to cool any modern HD and the Raptors are no exception. Just a very slow moving 120mm/92mm intake directed over/through the Rap's will suffice.

Thanks everyone! It sounds positive on the heat front.

Also double thanks BonzaiDuck for the Newegg link ... I had not really looked at that site before (though so many people here have mentioned it) because they don't ship to Australia, but the comments on the products look useful - I'm looking up all my components in there now. (As well as a closer look at the mfrs sites!)

Cheers
Malic
