two 512 4870's in xfire vs a 4850x2 and a 4850 512 xfire

I got a friend who has a 4870 512 and 4850 512 in xfire and is thinking about upgrading either to two 4870's in xfire or getting a 4850x2 (2g or 1g) for possible tri-fire. He currently games at 1680x1050 but is going to upgrade to either 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 (24 or more inches).

What do you guys think would yield better results?

I'd like 4870 512 CF of the choices.

4850 x3 might be faster in a few rare situations. What motherboard are you using?

Stick with standard 4870 crossfire. Trying to add the dual card into the mix might be more trouble than it is worth.

yeah I told him prob be easier to manage just the 2 cards. He just wondering and the performance diff.
