Twitter ultimate fail, Santa claus delivers coal, lots of it.

did they cause the derailment? Seems to be what the article is implying...

I don't see how they could have unless they were vandalizing the tracks. I also don't know how you can;'t hear a freight train coming. Passenger trains can sneak up on you, but freights are loud and slow.

From what I read it was a fenced in bridge. They were probably too busy txting/tweeting to have any situational awareness of their environment.

It sounds like they weren't on the tracks themselves, but a walkway, and they would have been fine if the train hadn't derailed. They probably wanted to sit there and see/hear/feel the train go by a few feet away.

I'd have to see a picture, but it's possible that they really couldn't have done much to ensure their survival once the train started coming off of the tracks.

They were saying on the radio today that the teens in Ellicott City hang out up on the tracks to smoke and do other teen things. Real scholars.

A train derailment happens where they are hanging out and people claim Darwin??

Anyone who associates Darwin's theories to this one is probably exponentially more vulnerable to an untimely death than these girls. Unless the conductor slammed on the breaks due to their presence, the odds of this happening must be statistically insignificant by any calculation, and I don't see how anyone could fault the girls. You're in much more danger standing on the sidewalk of almost any road with traffic.

I thought the same thing....

I'm not stupid enough to play on live train tracks. YMMV.

If she was playing on the tracks she would have gotten run over, not buried by coal from the derailment. The chances of a train derailing and cars overturning is a lot less than the chances a car jumps a curb and nails a pedestrian. Do you avoid all sidewalks too?

No. But I avoid train tracks. If she had my mentality she'd be alive.

Nope. Just avoiding train tracks.

If a train derails and tips a car full of coal, it could take people out that are in their cars waiting at a railroad crossing. These girls' death is not because they were 'stupid' enough to be near a track. Probably more likely that the conductor wasn't going the proper speed for the route. When people speed and wreck, they often take out innocent people. Trains are no exception.

Altho much of the country's railroad infrastructure is in shambles and tracks are shoddy, the conductor should be tested for BAC, which I wouldn't be surprised if he was well over the limit.

K I'm gonna leave this thread before I get really insensitive.

Nobody cares because you're a notorious troll and your opinion on this matter is stupid.

they could have been walking on the street as the train went by and killed by tons of coal that rained down. By your logic, they would have been stupid for walking on the street. Train derailments don't happen all that often - see trains run on these things called tracks which, as opposed to drivers who are prone to veering off the road due to simple gaps in attention, the tracks will keep the train running along a prescribed course.

this looks like exactly where it happened. there's no more reason to believe that you had any more chance of being hit by a derailing train in this spot, than you would believe that you would be struck by lightning on a sunny day.
