Twitter blocked in Turkey

After a series of publications of government corruption recordings from anonymous twitter accounts, finally they pulled the plug.

Not good. All the news from Turkey have been negative lately. I wished Turkey to become an EU state. :'(

I don't know much about Turkish politics but how did AK party get more than 50 % seats in the parliament? Seems dangerously high for a democracy.

Maybe a good thing that my brother in law didn't take that job as a nuclear engineer in Turkey. Lots of weird stuff going on over there lately. Proximity to Syria as well.

I firmly believe the internet falls under free speech, and that open communications is a hallmark of the modern world. Or at least western civilization. I hope one day all humans can embrace it, having cast off tribal tyranny and oppression.

Large organizations get very itchy when it comes to information that can expose their inner workings and corruption. Governments have more power to put a lid on such exposure. Look at the lengths to which the US government went to try and grab Snowden.

Always a very bad sign when a government is so threatened by information that they are willing to shut down a big popular service to try and keep the information from coming out.

Good thing for the EU that Turkey is not part of it. When Turkey begins their pretty-much-inevitable descent into religious fundamentalism, it's much easier for the EU to distance itself.

Turkeys problem to handle not mine.
Yes I think it is outrageous for any government to block communication that doesn't involve something that we all know is wrong like trading child porn.
Its the citizens of Turkey that need to address this.

the problem is erdogan and the religious nuts he is propergandering with. there is huge discontent and mobilization of many turkish citizens against him. the republic of turkey has long been secular for almost a century

The fact that a significant portion of the population was crazy enough to elect religious nuts to power means the country is pretty much doomed. Unless there's a mass revolt, they are toast.

erdogan has been in the governement for like over 10 years. he seems to have gone from secular to fundamentalism rather than being elected a fundamentalist. also he has some control over the turkish political process and probably has influenced the votes many times already.

If Europe has kept its promises to Turkey, given 40 years ago, this country would not have gone the way of Erdogan, Europe has preffered to give way to countries like Romania, Bulgaria who have come far later and with worse economies then Turkey to join the EU. Anyway, EU is not a choice for Turkey anymore, you can keep your aging union to yourself. Loss - loss

my knowledge of specific european relations is not that great but you are likely right. turkey has wanted to join the eu for a while now. the reasons that are given for preventing them from doing so are islam and the fact that most of turkey is in asia. the main reason why so many want turkey to join is because of the powerful turkish economy

Spot-on. Turkey fought the good fight for decades, but sadly is now inevitably sliding into Fundiestan. Muhammad didn't have Twitter, you don't need Twitter, bitch.

Google dns'es are blocked today, people can still access twitter via vpns and alternative dns servers.

Freedom of speech and free propaganda tools for the west, and pro west countries.

Twitter can organize mass amounts of people very quickly and with little preparation they found in Egypt. See this becoming the playbook for despots and madmen.

Its likely to be temporarily, Turkey blocked and unblocked Youtube multiple times over videos that suggested their historical tyrant Atatürk was homosexual. Or something like that.

You may as well argue that paper is full of western propaganda, that the East is illiterate and cannot write.
Social medias effect on rallying massive amounts of people quickly and having them conform to an ideology is greatly superior to that of paper and pen.

All the more easier for the East to highlight the corrupt decadence of the West. Surely they have a voice as well.

The whole country, supporter or opposer are waiting for recordings to be released tomorrow. There are big bets on what the contents are, sex ? Video recordings of bribes being carriwd in armoured vehicles ? Assasination orders ? Or a hoax.

Our internet may be down nationwide tomorrow

the EU's rebuff of turkey after turkey was making progress toward becoming an EU member is what led to the religious party coming into power.
