Of all of the playstation games I own or have owned in the past the ones that stand out to me most are the twisted metal series, it basically got me into the original playstation and I really enjoyed those games. I used to run home every time a new one came out and bugged my parents to let me atleast rent the game. Or having friends over so we could cause destruction on each others car. Hours and hours of fun. Since then I haven't really seen any new ones except for Twisted Metal Black on ps2 which I played a few times, not bad but it's getting kind of old now. Anyone hear about a new one in the works? I know there was a few different ones on PSP but I was thinking there might be one coming for PS3. I see quite a few fan sites out there dedicated for the game but most aren't updated much.

When David Jaffe released Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted Edition he promised that there was a hidden message in the game that would reveal the next project for Jaffe's Eat Sleep Play development studio.

Well it may have been "hidden really, really, really well" but you know how hardcore fans can be. A group over at Gamefaq managed to decipher the message in record time, discovering that it reads: METAL IS COMING ON PSTHREE.

I contacted Jaffe, who's hanging at DICE this week, to see if the gamers were on the money and he confirmed they were, adding his chagrin at how fast the code was discovered and cracked. Unfortunately, he hit me with a big fat no comment when I asked him if the upcoming PS3 version of Metal was going to be hitting the console via a disc or as a downloadable.

"As for how it gets distributed, no comment :)"

Honestly, Twisted Metal was great when it FIRST came out, but every version that I played after the first, with the exception of Black, was trash and just rehashed vehicular combat. They've gotta step it up to get me really interested.

Yeah the first one was the one that brought back most of my memories, the second one too. After that it sorta went downhill, not to mention all the clone games like Vigilante 8. Still for some reason I seemed addicted to the game. I do have head-on for the psp. I wish I could find my copy of the first game I bet it's all scratched up to death by now.

Say what? You guys are both on crack. TM1 was good, but TM2 was worlds better. It certainly wasn't "trash" compared to TM1. Basically everything about it is better. Now, TM3 and TM4 were indeed both trash. 989 Studios nearly destroyed the series with those games. Black was awesome... in fact, it plays very much a newer version of TM2.

The series does need to be mixed up a little though. I love the TM2/Black gameplay, but they need to change things up a bit to try and draw in some new fans. They (SingleTrac) actually did try some new things after TM2. They developed Rogue Trip and Critical Depth. Rogue Trip was OK, but the whole taxiing around a tourist part of the gameplay just didn't work very well. OTOH, Critical Depth was one of the most underrated PS1 games, IMO. An absolute blast to play. The pods you had to collect added a lot to the strategy of the combat. Then the fact that the vehicles were submarines which allowed attacks to come from literally any direction also added a lot of variety to the combat. Critical Depth is one of my favorite games of all time.

i agree with Thraxen. 2 was a solid sequel that took everything from 1 and made it bigger and better. 2 is better than 1 IMO. and after 2 it started to go downhill i agree as well.

Agreed. TM1 was amazing, because we had never seen anything like it before. It was games like TM, Warhawk, Destruction Derby, Battle Toshindon, and Resident Evil that made the Playstation what it is today. TM2 upped the ante considerably, and was an amazing game. Much better than the first.

Then 989 took over for TM3 and TM4, and they sucked...horribly. Luckily, control came back to the original developers for Black, and TM:B was fucking awesome. Spectre FTMFW. Hell, when I bought the network adapter and got the free online version of TM:B, that also was awesome. I ruled at that.

I'm completely looking forward to a new-gen TM game, I can't wait to see what it looks like. I'm just hoping they won't incorporate any of this stupid out-of-car shit they put into the Head-On PS2 remake that released last month.
