Hello everyone,

Just curious what methods/tweaks aside from overclocking you do to your operating system or how you installed windows and programs that give you the best performance.

Some things I did is stop a lot of programs from starting up that dont get used like useless printer/scanner software, etc from running int he background.

I also defrag regularly.

Only problems I have is that I share this comp with my gf and she needs her stupid aol and she loads crapy photos of her and her crazy friends on the comp. So it prevents me from formatting my harddrive and reinstalling.

Well anyway thanks for any replies.

That's when you know it's time to buy an external USB drive. Let the gf load up all her pictures on there so you can do whatever you want to the HD. That's the route I took for years. Then I just bought her her own damn computer so I didn't have to deal with it anymore. Hell, I even bought her a laptop too so she'd stay off mine.

Yeah well I have suggested that, but she resists the thought of having to use another computer.

It is amazing to me, she monopolizes our tv and now she wants control over the computer. Oh well. Whatre ya gunna do.

options include

1: Be a man and tell her to shut it and go make you a sandwich :D

2. Claim a nasty virus she let on the system nuked it and a fresh install was the only fix.

3. Stop worrying about a couple percentage points that OS and other non-overclocking related tweaks like faster timings yield because it won't effect gameplay perceptably. This excludes chipset, vid card driver improvements and presumes you aren't hurting for ram and game patches and such that have nothing to do with generic system tweaks. ;)

4.You use another computer.

5. Dump her for a less demanding SO.

Hehe, I like #1! Also instead of getting a new drive, you could just partition it separately, therefore you could repartition and format for a clean install of your OS without bothering your other partition's data.

im working on a "guide to free performance" right now as part of my site, not sure if i will finish it or not. Seem to be MANY sites already dealing with the same subject. if i were to finish it, it would have ways to increase your system performance thru tweaks and removing unessasary items from startup,, not just overclocking. but the more and more i look, i see there are all ready great websites dealing with the issue.

you will like this site, do a search there, they have performance and IQ tweaks for just about all games
http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/

in the mean time, about system resources, i can help you find less critical things in your startup. Start>run>msconfig can disable them and you can renable them later if you find you need it. post your startuplist log for review and i will do my best to tell you what non critical apps you can remove from startup using msconfig.

bud do make sure it is clean of any spyware/adware before posting your startuplist log. see my guide to malware removal and prevention. adware/spyware can slow your system down. expecially resource hogging worms.

You must be under 25 then :) I'm not even going to tell you how good I have it because it would just make you despondent :sun:

Hey there. I have an 8 GB fully functional Quantum Bigfoot 5400 RPM drive that might suit her quite well. I got pissed at my old GF using my comp and told her to put all her stuff on that drive. I'm still waiting for the click of death but it hasn't happened yet. :D

Thats how i have mine setup.
So she would be working physically on the same keyboard mouse n monitor, but on her own machine.
Also a great way to multitask. I can burn dvds while Im on city of heroes.

This forum is hilarious! My gf gets my hand me downs. 12gb hd, 400mhz p2, 160mb pc 100 ram, Gf3ti200. She has tons of crap (including a spyware/trojan thing (i havent really had the will too look at it yet) that adaware and spybot and norton wont remove) as well as other craptacular thing that my system is void of. And this thing still manages to play wc3 at 28fps. Its much better just giving her your extra crap then having her use ur computer.
