tweaking Win Me

Just installed Win Me w/out any problems. Can someone please tell me which of those programs Win Me places in the startup can be safely unchecked to improve system performance?

Thanks.

Tweak #1, do a clean install. I read a mag review that said WinMe did an upgrade install w/out any problems. Well, my upgrade install went fine too, that is until I started opening up some programs. Then I started getting all these error messages when I closed the programs.

Needless to say, I reformatted and have spent the last couple of hours reloading software but all is well. The error messages are gone.

Also, I disabled the pchealth and restore programs in the start up. The strange thing is that when both of these programs were running, my free system resources at start up were 96%. When I disabled both programs, free systems resources fell to 95%. How do you explain that?

have a look at Tweak Town for a Win Me tweak guide, also, disable system restor, System Proprties -> Performace -> File System ->Troubleshooting

Please check any links that you insert into your posts!

And - to make matters worse - that is a somewhat lame article, the guy is not any great expert or anything.

I have to say that I am quite pleased w/ the Win Me upgrade. Maybe I'm not as demanding as others here but for $50, I think it is a decent value.

After doing a clean install, everything is working just fine. And by the end of last night when I booted up, I had 99% of my system resources free. I think that's pretty darn good since the best I could get at startup in Win98SE was 96%.

Only one complaint, Microsoft and Symantec must have some kind of scam going. Now Norton's Sytemworks says it's not compatible w/ Win Me. When you consider the fact that Systemworks 2001 will cost you $60 for the upgrade which I'm sure will only include minor changes if any at all, it seems more like a compatibility upgrade which they should have just patched, the Win Me $50 upgrade looks like a bargain.

Most tweaks for Win95/98 will work for WinME. You might even be surprised and find that someof the tweaks are already there!
