Does this really cause neck issues for those who mount their TV's high off the ground? Just wanted to ask after seeing this picture of local house listing...the tv is pretty much at the ceiling...

Yes it's very stupid. You want your head, while in seated viewing position, to be about the same height as 1/3 or so up the TV.

That whole room is laid out horribly. Who the fuck is going to watch that TV from that couch?

And why is it so high up? There is like 2 feet from the top of that frame to the bottom of the TV lol.

Such a bad installation. And not even putting wires in the wall and using that cover...

I don't have any issues with mounting above the fireplace if that's the only way it works. At two houses I've mounted above the fireplace since it was the only way the room would work. I wouldn't do it if you couldn't set the seating up far enough away though, since the neck angle if you're sitting straight up would not be pleasant.

Mine is above the fireplace, no neck issues. The only place in the room to put it that wouldn't be janky looking. :D

The room in that picture, I'd rather have it on a nice console.

Before I got rid of my fireplace I had a terrible layout too, kind of like that room, because it was the only way to place everything. Getting rid of the fireplace gave me a wall in front of the TV so I could put the couch there. SO much better. Me personally I just use the stand that came with the TV. You need a cabinet to put all the AV stuff in anyway, so may as well just put the TV on it. Only thing is TV and monitor stands these days are super flimsy so I see why some rather mount to the wall but at least put it at a normal height.

I eventually want to upgrade to a 75 inch or whatever is the biggest size I can fit and at that point I would wall mount it. But it's one of those things I'll only do if I find myself with disposable income as my 55" is big enough and I hardly watch TV anyway.

lmao.

As a side note I'm glad the fireplace I tore out was not that extensive... lol.

This was mine...

Before that, I had no choice but to put the couch at a 90 degree angle from the TV which was ridiculous. I did not even have the option of putting the TV over the fireplace as it was not centered with the other part of the room so nothing would line up right. It was a really weird setup.

Always wondered about TVs over fireplaces, don't they get dirty and covered with smoke and soot. I would think it would be like a computer that belongs to a smoker. You open it up and it is filled with ash blocking the ventilation and thus causing overheating and eventual failure?

We have ventless gas logs and the damper is closed. Pretty sure the TV would melt.

Here is a pic of what a properly height mounted TV looks like. Mine.

The only place that I have my TV mounted slightly higher is in the bedroom, and that's due to the viewing angle generally being a bit different. Apart from that, the TV in the living room was mounted to put the middle of the TV around eye level. The speakers were also mounted (in the wall) to be around a similar height.

lmao.

I'd love to get rid of my fireplace. It wouldn't be so bad if it was the sleak, recessed style that you see in houses today, but it's just so bulky and in the way. Plus... I'm in the South... why would you need a fireplace here?

That's why the TV is up that high.

Anyway, you shouldn't watch TV; it makes people stupid.

Haha that's almost exactly how I have mine set up. Its great, harder to block the TV, keeps it out of kids reach (although a few months ago they chucked a toy and broke the TV anyway).

Its zero strain on the neck.

It's not just height but angle too. If you are 5 feet away and the tv is 6 feet high, it might be unworkable and weird. Ours is over the fireplace about 5 ft high (Bottom of tv) but the main viewing is 11 feet away. It's also open to the kitchen so that height creates an ideal viewing from the couch or the stove/sink/table. And really high ceilings make it look decent too.

I don't care for the look either but I realize that sometimes it's the only way to mount the tv in a living room. About two years ago my wife and I were house shopping and we looked at a metric fuck ton of houses and a lot of them had the tv over the fire place which instantly made us look at the layout of the living room to see if it could be done another way. Most times it couldn't be done at least not with out interfering with the transition from one room into the next.

One thing that really gets me about this type of setup is when the tv is over the fireplace so you have to look up at it but then the furniture in the room is perpendicular to the tv and fireplace. So not only are you looking up at the tv but you also have to move your neck and head 90 degree's to also view the tv. One of my wifes friends living room is setup this way and it's awful. Even she admits that most of the time when her and her husband want to watch tv they either go to the basement or the bedroom because it's more comfortable.

I think all the home mags and tv shows call this "conversational seating" but it's so stupid. Why even have a tv in the room to begin with? Anyway, that's my little rant about having the tv over a fireplace.

^ Cantilevered mount on a cantilevered drywall chimney, I hope that's a photoshop.
