Tvs as a monitor?

Who uses a TV as a monitor, like an LCD or Plasma.

In the past I heard it wasn't a good idea, but I guess technology has caught up. I saw a big LG TV beingused at Circuit City and wouldn't mind a 26-30" monitor.

If y'all use something like this, Pro and Cons please.
 
I noticed one at Comp usa today probably a 26inch LCD tv hooked up to a computer and it looked awesome. Definately need to move the chair back a bit but I could get use to it.

I've seen a few post where guys say don't buy an LCD tv if you want to use it as a monitor/TV. I don't get it, I also saw one at BB last week 30inch LCD TV I sat down and surfed the web and text looked great. Sure looks much better than when I ran my tv out on my video card to my tv years ago.

Unless I'm missing something here I would consider one of these for a monitor/TV over one of the smaller Dell 24" LCD's
 
There is such a thing as too big for something you're sitting close to. You don't want to have to move your eyes around their full range to see the screen or even have to move your neck around.

Check the resolution on something you're getting.
Something like a 720p 30" tv vs a 1920x1200 24" dell will have significantly larger pixles.

Anyway, try some out for use and see what you think.
 
Ribbon, I disagree on a few levels. It depends on the distance you are sitting away. I wouldnt want 1920x1080 to play WoW on anyway. I mean, certainly the icons and text can be switched around, but 1920x1080 TVs aren't a necessity. The one I have mentionned in that post, from tigerdirect is a good solution if youre on the other side of the room.

That westinghouse really is quite outstanding, and if I could find somewhere that ships to Canada I might, but the response time is 16ms, which is a bit high for my liking.
 
If i want to sit closer, I'd just call the Dell 2405 a "TV" and be done with it. 😛

It's actually 12ms. I wanted to find the smallest screen size with native res of 1080p. It was the result of my search. The other one I was looking at, but is much harder to buy, is the Barco LC-42, but It was twice as heavy, and cost twice as much.
 
Yes, thats sorta what I was getting at. If you're going to get a tv that big, which Im planning on doing, you may as well be on the other side of the room to enjoy it. Thats why I sort of don't understand why such a high resolution is a necessity.
 
Well, it's not for most people, but for anyone who is getting a PS3 or Xbox360, or get's the itch of hooking thier computer up to it, the difference will be night and day.

If hooking a computer up to it is a future goal, do NOT settle for low res. I just got rid of a $6000 1366x768 plasma in favor of that Westinghouse for that very reason.
 
Im planning on getting the 360 and Ps3 and its going to be my primary gaming monitor for my computer :S Any recommendations for 1080p LCD tvs in Canada... I can't seem to find any.
 
Shipping from the states to Canada is a hefty order. I'd be paying brokerage fees, extra shipping costs. If its defective in anyway, its game over.

Perhaps you could have it shipped to a family member in the US, near the border? I'll see if I can find a canadian place that sells it.

Where in canada are you? Also, perhaps you could ask your local eletronics shops if that could order that Westinghouse?
 
Well, it's the cheapest decent one I could find, and this was the most comprehensive list of 1080p televions on the web I could find.

Change the ordering by the MSRP column. Notice it goes up VERY quickly
 
I do. Now, the BenQ one I can get, but I've had this whole discussion before about how the actual resolution maps out back down to the 1366x768.
 
I've contacted tigerdirect.ca to see if they can get one in, and I've also contacted Westinghouse to see if they distrubute it anywhere in Canada.
 
oh, that's BenQ's issue, not 1080p in general.

And that thread is full more of flames between ArchAngel and ST than useful info

As for that MGD link. It doesn't say 1080p as input standard! Beware, that may be the same issue as the BenQ
 
Yea, but there was some discussion that took place.

That TV didn't have 1080p. It appears as though I'm going to have to find a way to get the westinghouse if I want a 1080p TV thats not ridiculously expensive.

The BenQ is the MDG. Its the same television.

any luck finding it in canada?
 
In your thread, they mention the Sceptre 37" also takes 1080p PC input, and is available at costco. Maybe a canadian costco can get one?
