k so now i need (i feel that i need but really i just really really really want) a TV tuner card. my dorm next semester is gonna be really small (quite like a prison cell) and im gonna use my new dell 2405 as a tv screen as well as a monitor. im looking for a tv tuner w/ a remote control. a remote is a must. recording software is a plus but not needed. any suguestions would be greatly appreciated. budget is $60-100 US

You definitely want to stay away from the old BT878/848 series chip on a TV card. Its lack of contrast and color gamut will be too obvious on a good display.

Use something with a newer Conexant 2388x or Philips 713X chip.

thanks for the quick replies

i have no idea what your talking about w/ the chip things im totally new to tv tuners and i have a limited knowldge of resolution stuff and contrast things

my budget is under or around $100 US dollars

if you can find it on newegg id appreciate it

Hmmmm,,,, lookz like u really know ur stuff.."bookmarked the site" was lookin to get a tuner after my ati died. Umm, say we didn't have a budget which one would u recommend.. just so that we know what "tech/chips" to look for

The only thing a more expensive card could do better is add a co-processor for hardware MPEG2 compression, to offload the CPU whilst recording. In terms of videograbber chip and standard TV tuner technology, you can't do any better than with what's on the card I linked to.

HDTV or digital video broadcasting is a different story - on the tuner end. The main chip remains the same.
