TV SURROUND COMPATIBILITY HELL

Have a new LG smart tv, 5 year old Sony 5.1 surround, they are connected by both HDMI and optical sound. Every Damn time the TV/system is powered down, and every time I switch between any of the 3 HDMI inputs the surround shouts off and out reverts back to built in tv audio. Only way to remedy is to either turn off and back on the surround, or unplug and replug the optical. I hate the whole thing working swimmingly until a couple weeks ago when the internet tech installed my Wi-Fi. Apparently he unplugged some shot and I can't reacquire symbiosis...
What the hell is the problem?

sounds like a setting on the TV is wonky. And why would you connect both optical and HDMI to the TV at the same time?

Usually a TV won't update without some sort of input from the user. When my TV's or receiver wants to update I see a notification.

Also most TV's that I have used have a setting to disable the TV speakers.

TV probably got updated when wifi was connected.

Don't connect both HDMI and optical at the same time. Use HDMI only.

This. If the receiver has HDMI then use that for both video switching and audio pass thru. My receiver does not have HDMI so I have to switch HDMI via the TV and then audio (optical) via the AVR. Plus, I turn off the damn TV's speakers. If I'm in the living room then I want full sound.

Not sure if this is causing your problem but I have used multiple devices with both HDMI for video and optical for audio so I do not think that would cause any issues.
