TV still have black bars on top and bottom

So I was under the impression that if I buy a flat screen TV, the black bars would go away. Well, it hasn't. I have a 46" Samsung LN46A550 with video set up to 16:9. Also have a Philips DVP3982 Upconverting DVD player set to 16:9.

The reason is that movies are shot in 2.35:1 (or 2.40:1) usually, which in the theater looks like no black bars (they strategically move the curtains). Your 16:9 tv translates to 1.78:1, which is a lot different than the movie format. Imagine if your TV was over 2 times wider than it was tall. That would look ridiculous IMHO.

Anyone ever seen a study regarding these cheapo upconverting dvd players compared to the internal scaler of the tv?

I would like to see which one actually provides a better picture, my guess is for most people it would be impossible to tell.

Ok, so I tried the chainsaw fix, and the black bars are gone now. But that's only because the whole screen is black. Is there something wrong with my Blu-Ray player? It already couldn't play Iron Man.

The Blu-Ray is likely overheating. Use the chainsaw to cut some horizontal (NOT VERTICAL) slits along the width of the player to allow better ventilation.

Also try cross-drilling holes in the disc for ventilation. If you get get any stuttering, try slotting the disc... it helps keep it clean.
