Here is what I know as a FIOS customer. My box outside is ready for the TV part. However since the cable company ran the cable inside the house Verizon is not allowed to use it.

For those that don't know fiber can use multiple wavelengths for bandwidth.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/ = my internet
/-\-/-\-/-\-/ = my telephone
/'\./'\./'\./'\ = my tv

What they told me is that each service would use a different wavelength. However, several employees tell me they have been running into issues with this and would rather put a box in the house which connects to the router they provide and have it go over cat 5 and use bandwidth. That means they are going to have cisco hardware in COs which knows when i hit the channel up channel down button and its going to switch the channel for me. That also means they are going to have to up my bandwidth by a considerable amount to be able to use the internet wavelength for the tv as well.
This service was said to become available in spring of 06 so ill post back when I get it.

How does Verizon get into the house or are you talking about the actual INSIDE wiring? That isn't under your control?

The voice is sent to a box that is plugged into our phone lines(verizon's obviously) there are several voice ports on the outside box. The cat5 is ran from the outside to our router.

ok. Are you considering getting hooked up for IPTV then? Man, I wish I could do that instead of being backed into only comcast.

bandwidth is an issue.

Conclusion: LOTS of bandwidth needed. FTTx is really our only hope, or high speed VDSL.

Verizon is definitely looking into IPTV over FIOS. A friend of mine that works there said that Verizon's overall goal with FIOS is to offer voice, data, and tv services on their network. Much like cable companies are trying to do now with broadband internet and digital phone features.
