When trying to play a movie in tv-out it seems to only work whenever i make the tv the primary display... is there a way around this alowing my monitor to be primary and my tv be extended yet still be able to watch the movies?
 
which video card?

i always watch shows on my tv from my computer. MOnitor satys primary and the tv becomes secondary.

Right Click Desktop | Properties
Settings Tab
"display" Pull down menu. Go to the number "2"
Check the "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor"
-- make sure in the graphics window, the 2nd window is to the right of 1.
-- also, make sure your tv is on when you do this.
 
I prefer to clone the monitor/primary to TV/secondary and use the Overlay feature Theater Mode so that videos can be background or minimized on the monitor and full-screen on the TV.
