TV out card

Hi,

I recently got a new TV, and am thinking about getting a TV out card so I can play all my DIVX movies on TV. Does anyone of any recommendations? My budget is about 100 dollars

I already have a pretty good video card so I am wondering if there is any PCI TV out card so I don't have to replace my current video card, but I am open to other suggestions.

thanks in advance,
Benson

I did some search on R8500 and they are all pretty much at upper 100 range...Are there any cards that are below 100 and provide decent quality? The compuUSA deal is sold out..

thanks in advance

I have researched the R8500 cards, and the biggest problem I found is that it doesn't support independent resolution when both S-video and CRT are hooked up under Windows 2000. Unfortunately, I am running windows 2000, and I don't want to have a 800x600 resolution on my monitor when I connect the S-video to my TV. Does anyone know any other card that support separate resolution with CRT and TV under windows 2000.

thanks in advance

BTW, another cool option I was thinking will be that the video card can have the video playing on TV while letting me use the monitor for other purposes...So I can watch my divx movies while searching for hot deals on anandtech.com at the same time. (again under windowss 2000 platform) has anyone ever tried this before?

thanks

The R8500 does does do everything you want under 2000. The only weird thing is that the movie cannot be minimized on the monitor using Windows Media Player 6.4 in 2000 and continue playing full screen on the TV. It can be made very small and pushed partly off screen though. I have heard mention of other players not having this problem but cannot confirm. It can be minimized under XP.

On the ATI FAQ 8500 page (http://www.ati.com/products/pc/radeon8500le/faq.html). It says:

Q37: Can you run different resolutions and refresh rates with two different displays attached simultaneously?
A37: Windows® 98, Windows® 98 SE, Windows® Me and Windows® XP support independent resolutions and refresh rates on both displays in extended desktop mode. Windows® NT 4.0 (not supported) and Windows® 2000 will support independent refresh rates, however, they will not support independent resolutions. Windows® NT 4.0 and Windows® 2000 operating systems initiate what is known as ?Big Desktop Mode? when two displays are attached and they treat two displays as one single desktop.

So you have tried with different resolution under windows 2000 and it works?

thanks for the response

I do not use dual CRT. But for CRT + S-Video which you seem to be concerned about the TV can match the monitor resolution up to 1024x768 in clone mode. The TV will be at 60Hz of course while the monitor is at whatever you like. Of course, if the monitor res is set higher then the desktop image on the TV has to be panned to see it all. But this is not the case when using Theater Mode to output the overlay to TV. It will scale appropriately. I hope that answers your question.
