Good day,

I always thought that mounting a TV on a regular mount over a fireplace would make watching TV uncomfortable.

I didn't have a choice other then on top of the fireplace, so I started looking around for a solution until I found the "Down and Out Swivel Mount" from <spam removed>

You can move the TV in all direction, PLUS pull it down for easy viewing. The whole TV is supported a very high quality support that can handle any 40" flat panel TV from 25 to 120lbs.

The product, service and shipping are amazing, and they offer rebates too!

Here are some pictures of my installation. Not finished yet... still working on it :)

Cheers,

R!

Thread not recycled, since there's a bit of discussion about the merits (or lack thereof) of mounting a television above a fireplace. -Admin DrPizza

Better not use the fire place and watch TV simultaneously.
I did not click the link as it may be spam considering it's your first post.

PS: I own a fire place, it puts out a lot of heat. Placing the TV 6" in front of a fire place is a terrible idea.

Putting a TV over a fireplace is a terrible idea. The heat and smoke greatly decreases its life:

And that is a nice Sony too. Poor Sony, it deserves better than that.

Its like all my family buying these in-wall speakers for TONS of money that sound terrible compared to my RTIs. Interior decorating and technology don't mix well.

I was looking for something like this. Thanks OP.

I don't care if people are paid to post good reviews, as long as they aren't deceitful.

Yeah, no AVS or Anandtech :)

Post to Forums - $50 per Forum Go to ANY Forum or Blog (hopefully one you've been a member of for a while) and write about your experience with companynameremoved. If you could add a couple of pictures and hyperlink to the website I would appreciate it. Make sure to post that you plan on getting the rebate. I can't rebate for Amazon reviews, I would appreciate if you did them though. Unfortunately I can't except posts to AVSForum or AnandTech anymore.

If it can be moved easily enough, and the only solution is over the fireplace, I think this is a good idea.
Frankly, if I had to go that route, I'd plan on never watching TV with a fire going.
I also never, ever, want to mount a TV so high. I have seen some people prefer the location of the TV where their fireplace is, but the only solution is a TV way too high.
Depending on how much effort it takes to actually move the TV on its mount, I'd like the idea of lowering it to watch, but moving it up out of the way so that a fire can be enjoyed.

That said, personally, I will forever and always avoid a TV anywhere near a fireplace. Eventually, there might be an issue with WAF, but, for now, I get to make all my decisions as a bachelor. :D

Well if you don't use the fireplace then its not a big deal.

except that it looks retarded having a tv mounted like 5 feet up a wall, where you are constantly looking up at the tv instead of straight at the tv. you're neck won't last long in that position without starting to ache.

and yeah, that mount fixes the problem, but it just looks really stupid. at that point you might as well just get an entertainment center to put in front of the fireplace, since you aren't using it anyways.

I mean I would never put a TV in such a place (heck I love plasma, I can't hang my TVs). But at least this isn't yet another TV killed because of a primitive desire to put your trophy above your family's fire pit.

I have a 50 panny plasma over the fireplace. We installed a custom mantel and mounted the tv and it works perfectly. Our room is oddly shaped, really no other place for the TV in the room. It was a little odd at first, but we bought a dual reclining loveseat so we can sit back and watch it and its the right height when looking at the tv from the kitchen.

You quickly get used to it and realize that it doesn't look awkward. I thought that at first also but took some photos and asked people at work about it and every single one of them said it looked good. I was skeptical at first also, but after a week, it looks normal and isn't a hassle to watch. I mean, you aren't going to have your chair right under the TV.

I just liquid nailed my plasma directly to the wall because of earthquakes and tornadoes. Who even needs a stinking wall mount? and I used duct tape to hold it up while the glue set. And I liked the duct tape effect so much I left it on there after the glue dried. I just put the duct tape across the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen where there wasn't any picture anyhow, so no big loss there.
