TV issues

I had a leak in my roof that caused a bunch of water to build up. The ceiling cracked open and a bunch of water came down on my TV, a Samsung UN60ES8000 (2012 edition). Now it randomly has weird color issues where it gets a redish tint to everything in the upper right corner and will also randomly shut itself off. For a good while it'll act like nothing is wrong then the tint thing will happen. It also get random pixelating but not sure if it's the TV or DirecTV which has happened every once in a while. I've attempted to reset it to factory defaults just to see if it'll do anything without luck.. it also does this on my Xbox as well..minus the pixel stuff, that's only happened when watching DirecTV but that could just be because I haven't given it enough time on the Xbox or watching a disk.

My question is, are these things repairable? Is is something simple like a easily replaceable board that sounds like it fried, or am I just screwed? Are they worth repairing? I paid around $3500 for it when I bought it 5 years ago, but now I'm seeing that you can get a much better TV at that price point (go fig, tech moving forward and all). While I'm not flush with cash now, and I'm not sure what insurance would do (I question if it's worth raising my rates by putting in a claim for the TV if it's simple or what). The HOA is repairing the damage to the house, it's a patio home, a townhouse but one story. The HOA covers everything outside but inside is normally on the homeowner. As this happened because the roof wasn't properly repaired (this area has had a couple of leaks that were repaired) and that caused the build up and damage the HOA has to repair the dwelling itself. No word on the TV, but I've no doubt it'll go back to the cost and if it's worth it.

You can usually buy replacement power and TCON boards for a decent price. Albeit, there's no guarantee that his panel itself didn't get damaged. If that's the case, then it isn't worth fixing, but if it is just the boards, that isn't that bad to fix... as long as the parts are available.

You just never know with water damage. It tends to be wide area short.

Yeah, I do agree that it's possibly a gamble. I'd recommend just looking into the cost of replacement boards. If it's a couple hundred, it might not be worth it since TVs have come quite a ways over the past five years, and there may be more value in a new TV.

Maybe harder since it is an old tv, but I would look for used tv with broken panel. They are useless to the owner but buying the whole thing should be cheaper than paying per part.

UHTVs are pretty cheap now with a lot better features and the sizes is unbelievable for the price, for example, a 55" LED with 4K, HDR, Doblyvision and true 120mhz motion is $500!

Don't mess around with any high powered electronics that have water damage. If you take it to a shop, a good one will charge your half the cost of a used new TV. So the decision is up to you. I would just toss on craigslist and be honest about it then use that money to buy a new one. Good thing for you is it's the holidays! Lots of sales now until Xmas.

I do appreciate the feedback from everyone.. I haven't really done anything with the TV as it's turned into a battle between my HOA and my insurance company. The HOA controls and owns the outside, while I'm responsible for everything inside. This was caused by a damaged roof (that was supposedly fixed a few times but never was) that leaked into my area and built up until 'boom' all over my living room TV area. Normally the HOA would repair this type of damage, but when presented with the bill (this is just to fix the Townhouse) reneged at the last minute (the people were scheduled to come out and fix the roof leaving me to wonder about my TV and whatnot) and decided that I was responsible and needed to go through my insurance... which is annoying and has stopped everything. My insurance is trying to sort out wtf has happened and if they can sue my board to repay them after they fix the place (looks like it might be the case, but not 100% sure)... good times had by someone not me. At any case, the TV is toast and I've been trying to sort out what I'm going to replace it with. I've been holding off as now that my insurance is involved who knows what they'll pay or tell me to do. F*&king HOAs.. some days they work other days they blow..
