tv composers

I've always felt that a lot of tv shows have great theme songs. Not all.

And then I noticed that while some are one-offs - like Star Trek, composed by Alexander Courage - some do multiple series.

The most famous I notices is Mike Post, starting with the Rockford Files and making many others.

Recently, I found another.

I like the show Black Sails a lot, and its theme song is great. I looked up the composer - it's Bear McCreary. I looked to see anything else he's done.

And he'd done a lot of shows. Most notably for my watching, the very good theme song for Battlestar Galactica. Also The Walking Dead, and other shows and movies.

Just writing this post I noticed that 10 Cloverfield, out now, has his composing.

Just a thread to recognize the genre of theme songs.

I'm impressed by how some movie theme songs used to be pretty amazing as well. Remember when they'd make a movie like Dr. Zhivago, and have amazing music?

The Pink Panther? The Wizard of Oz?

Not a lot of tv theme songs are as notable that I see now, Bear being the exception - though CSI did a good license of Eminence Front by The Who...

Chat if you have any comments on the songs.

BTW, one of my least favorites: Enterprise.

He didn't write/compose them all, but he and his band arranged, and performed many movie, and TV show theme songs. It was said that if you could get him to perform your theme song, you were assured of a hit.
HENRY MANCINI

a surprising number of NIN collaborators have gone into TV/Movie scoring. The most notable here are Charlie Clouser and Atticus Ross.

I always meant to try making a hurdy gurdy, but never got to it. Cool sound; like a strung bagpipe. I like Trailer Park Boys theme. It's roughly I Left My Heart in San Francisco

Great sound effects!

The Crystal Method does quite a few theme songs these days.

I really like the theme song for Banshee, but it is more of an industrial type song, as opposed to most.

Funny about the hate for Enterprise....that song alone turned me off to the show. :/ It just didn't fit at all, bring back the big orchestra and excitement...not sentimentality.

Oliver Nelson

Great jazz composer, sax player, band leader. His Stolen Moments is one of the most well-known jazz standards ever written.

Television projects included Ironside, Night Gallery, Columbo, The Six Million Dollar Man and Longstreet. Films scored by Nelson include Death of a Gunfighter (1969), Skullduggery (1970) and Zig Zag (1970).[4] He also arranged Sonny Rollins' music for Alfie (1966) and Gato Barbieri's music for Last Tango in Paris (1972). During this time he also arranged and produced albums for pop stars such as Nancy Wilson, James Brown, the Temptations, and Diana Ross.
