Can anyone please give me some suggestions on tv capture cards? I'm looking to do some simple capturing of some programs. I don't need anything that's too high tech. I just need something that will capture with good quality video. Other things like watching tv on my computer is not a priority so I don't need something like the ATI All-in-Wonder. I've been looking into the TV Wonder PCI/VE cards but they seem to have a lot of software problems. I've also heard about Hauppauge but I can't find any of those and because I live in Canada, sites like Newegg won't help.

Any ideas? Or should I just get something simple from a no name company like the TV View99?

My system specs if needed:

Epox 8KHA+ KT266a
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ 1.47ghz
Crucial 512mb PC2100 DDR
Gainward GF3 Ti200 @ 220/500
IBM 60GXP 60GB

Win98se -- possibly WinXP soon

You can get an hauppage winTV card for around 60 dollars if you trade/buy it used. With software capturing programs it works excellently. If you aren't running win2k or winXP you may also want to consider the DC-10 Studio Plus from pinnacle, although it's about 80 dollars, it does hardware encoding. If you want to go really cheap, you could get an old voodoo3 35000, although quality is not good on captured video. There are also other options, but I've only used the three I mentioned. Don't get the winTV card if you don't have a cpu above 900 MHz.

I saw your specs, winTV card would work fine with an athlon XP, it's what I'm using now <- edit

Hey, thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

I would like to get the Hauppauge but I can't find it anywhere.. yet. I live in Canada so I can't go on Newegg or something but I'll keep looking. I don't want to spend too much on this either. This is harder than getting a gaming video card.

Thanks for your suggestions

I have the wintv. i got it for $49 and strongly recommend it. I had the ati wonder ve, but traded that in for the wintv cuz of it's software problem.

Do you know if there are different versions of this card? I heard that there is a bad and a good version.
I've only seen this model called "hauppauge Wintv PCI"...

What does the original package come with? Any cables?

well, there's a wintv and a wintv-go. The two differences are that the go is mono and doesn't have an FM tuner while the regular one is stereo and offer an FM tuner and it's also more expensive(make that three differences). It comes with pretty much everything you need except an mini to rca adapter for capture video/audio from any source with an RCA output (such as your vcr, ps2, camcorder, etc...)
