TV brands

Find out who makes them. Could be owned by a larger company.

I remember looking for a TV about 5 years ago, and RCA/General Electric had awful reliability (like 25% needed repairs).

Use Legend's list, though you may want to also exclude Phillips Magnavox IMO.

Toshia, Panasanic, Samsung, and Sony are all fine brands though.

Things may have changed, but back in 1999, when I was looking at 27" TVs, Phillips Magnavox came in 3rd in reliability tests. Since we're talking about standard TVs (I'm assuming), I'd take Sony off if anything, which tends to score high on picture quality but average on reliability.
 
Average on reliability? What TV's are you guys buying that aren't "reliable" I don't think i've ever encountered a regular tv (non HD/plasma etc.), well known brand or not that isn't reliable.
 
I like Phillips and Sony both, although it really depends on the specific product. They each have plenty of winners and losers.

To reenforce what others have said: GET THE FVCK OUT OF KMART!

Mmm .. Sanyo ...
They patented the "burn proof" technology that was so popular with CD burners ..... (I think they worked with plextor on that ..)
I've had a Sanyo DVD player for 5+ years, never had a problem with it.

Never owned one of their TVs, but I'd say they are probably a good buy.

Don't forget Hitachi and Sharp.
 
Stay away from Insignia. That's the Best Buy brand and everything we (I work there) put out is complete sh!t.

The best out of those is Westinghouse but only the newer ones. I'm pretty sure Best Buy doesn't sell the newer ones so it's only marginally better than the others.
