I'm going to oppress the shit out of you.

It's funny cause in college I ended up taking several courses in Native American Studies to complete some of my elective requirements. So nobody can say I never had any interest in it before. 🙂

1/8th has been the metric I've most seen.

Yep. Unless they've changed the rules in the past few years, you need to be a MINIMUM of 1/8 Native American to qualify for any benefits, and only certain tribes gain you any real benefit at all.

Ahhh, for the old days of smallpox infected blankets and no other questions asked. 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉

That's it, my neighbor actually brought this up recently. His grand-father was the last to get any benefits. It's also on a sliding scale with the least percentage getting not much of anything.

He says the reason the drunk indian stereotype is out there is because the purer bloods get so much money, have land and a place to live covered that the only thing left to do is drink (and fuck he added)...

Not a bad life. Now here at least they are doing huge casinos and really making a killing.

Usually it's a 1/8th, but check with your Tribal Offices.

you could always claim your family was oppressed into mating with white folk and that is why you aren't quite 1/8th indian...

we all have oppression in our family tree somewhere, at some point. a lot of our ancestors fled here to escape religious and/or political oppression. shame certain people can use it to get freebies when they themselves weren't oppressed AT ALL.

not directed entirely at you OP, just a general feeling I have about the situation.

I have quite a few family members on the Sioux reservations in South Dakota, and could qualify for tribal rights if I wanted to. I'm about 3/8 Sioux and a bit of Cheyenne too. MORE than enough for my BIA registration, and some of the tribes get pretty decent checks from the BIA.
I spent part of 2 summers on the res when I was a kid. I learned a lot about the tribal heritage and history...then saw the way these people live.

Me, middle class white american with immigrant parents that came to the country with nothing at all, had to pay $20k/yr out my own pocket. I dont know about you, but ive been oppressed pal.

Typical immigrant asking for a handout :|

You're lucky those Native Americans even let you in to their country :|

I'm jealous, there isn't a scholarship for middle class male white kids 🙁

The profit you extracted from us brown people over the past 500 years isn't enough to pay your tuition?

I have a PhD in math and I suck at adding.

Generally how it works, I thought...if calculus comes naturally to you, you'll probably reach for your calculator on the simpler stuff.😉

I've known since I was 12 that my Great Grandmother on my Dads side was full blooded Cherokee (it wasn't talked about much, that's why it took me awhile to find out).

I've never once thought of taking advantage of any "benefits" from that heritage because I, me personally, have never had anything to do with any tribe nor has my life been altered because of opression.

I think for me to claim otherwise is not fair to those who truly need it and/or were more directly affected by any discrimination or opression.

I technically qualify for affirmative action, though I look as white bread as it gets (except for getting a great tan easily and never burning in the summer time).

I agree with you; I don't think he deserves anything.

Nobody deserves anything. As long as no one gets hurt, take what you can get, I say.

If the thought of a few people of Native American heritage getting scholarships at the government's expense riles some of you, you'll REALLY love this:

The lawsuit over monies owed to the tribes by the US Government has been going on for quite a while, and the latest number I've heard that they claim is owed is $58 BILLION!

Indian Suit Seeks $58 Billion
by Mary Clare Jalonick
Associated Press Staff Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? American Indian plaintiffs say the United States owes them $58 billion in a long-running lawsuit over government mismanagement of lands.

Plaintiffs in the 12-year-old lawsuit submitted the filing to federal court this week after U.S. District Judge James Robertson asked for their input.

The suit, first filed in 1996 by Blackfeet Indian Elouise Cobell, claims the government has mismanaged billions of dollars in royalties held in trust from American Indian lands dating back to 1887.

In a January decision, Robertson said Interior Department accounting for billions of dollars owed to American Indian landholders has been "unreasonably delayed" and is ultimately impossible.

At the same time, Robertson said the overall task is not hopeless, and he has set a June trial date to find a remedy for the seemingly endless legal battle. The government will have a chance to respond to the plaintiffs' filing before the trial.

In a statement, the plaintiffs said the $58 billion number represent the accumulated savings the government has earned from dollars that should have been promptly deposited into individual Indian trust accounts.

Cobell said the $58 billion number is reasonable. Earlier estimates by the plaintiffs have had the government owing $100 billion or more.

"We believe that our numbers are very conservative and represent the minimum harm that Indians have suffered under our broken trust system," she said.

The government proposed paying $7 billion partly to settle the Cobell lawsuit last year, but that was rejected by the plaintiffs.

Interior Department aides did not immediately return requests for comment.

Wanna talk about something that might affect your taxable income...
(it's about fucking time the tribes were compensated fairly. They've been robbed and cheated ever since the white man came to this country. The records have been destroyed in an attempt to hide how much has been stolen, and the theft continues today...
