Turning On PC Remotely

I know that there is a way to use PC remotely (by use, I mean, seeing and manipulating everything in your PC through other PC) But is there any way to turn it on remotely so I don't have to keep the PC turned on everytime in order to be accessed remotely?

Doesn't Wake On LAN "wakes" PC up upon receiving a special sequence of packets? How would random external probe cause any problem? I am behind a router, will that make any difference?

Wake on LAN is a very specific packet. A SMB command or ping won't wake it up.

Depends. Windows XP supports both wake on lan and wake on access (e.g. specific packet or any packet). I use it here, but only since I have a server that I run which is always on and then I connect to it's web page to turn on any of the internal machines.

I don't know of a home router with the same functionality, however.
