Turning my ISP router into just a modem

Hers my setup

ISP Router/modem zhone 6218(192.168.1.1) >>> D Link dir 615 (192.168.2.1) >>>> pcs and wireless devices

The cable goes from the zhone 6218 lan to the dir 615 wan port and it works.
In my setup the routing is still done by zhone 6218 because the ISP wan settings are in it. But what I want is to turn zhone 6218 into just a modem and do all the routing by d link 615. Is this possible?

Google your modem model and PPPoE transparent bridging.

Should be doable depending on your configuration/modem model. I know with century link you have to contact support to get your username and password to supply to your router when it connects.

A quick note though, if you do this, turn off the wifi that is a part of the modem first, as you are usually unable to access the configuration after setting the modem to bride mode mode without resetting the modem.

Just make the SSIDs of both routers the same along with the encryption types and passwords and enjoy the greater wireless coverage.

I just want my zhone to act as a modem and let my dir615 do all the routing. But zhone has a pppoa connection and when I change it to bridge mode I dont get the ISP gateway. I read that its more difficult to do this when its pppoa instead of pppoe. The ISP wants their customers to route through zhone. I dont think there are any workarounds for this.

Unfortunately that doesnt work either. It seems like dir-615 needs dd-wrt to put it in repeater mode.

I am Not familiar with the Z.

Not all Modem/Routers can turn into a working Modem.

Keep Googling you might find an answer.

PPPoA is not unexpected, the Modem becomes the "Bridge" to PPPoE if I recall correctly.

Did you get the information from you ISP to supply to DDWRT?

Did you configure this menu on DD-WRT?

If you do not mind sharing, who is your ISP? I have done this with DDWRT, pFsense and now a Vyatta Core VM and all have had no issue with a C1000A modem on Century Link.

Call your ISP and tell them you just want a router and have them swap it out. They all offer just a router and it shouldn't cost you anything. Some ISPs actually charge extra for a router over a modem. You'll get what you want in a supported way from your ISP and won't have to fiddle with anything.

Kinda crude but what you can do is forward all ports (1-65535) to the other router. it's still going to be a double NAT but at least from a management perspective it wont be as much work to forward ports.

The Zhone 6218 can be put in bridged mode, which is what you're looking for. If you do a factory reset, it should be in bridge mode by default. This is assuming it doesn't have a proprietary firmware for the ISP. If that doesn't work, you can call your ISP customer support and they might be able to talk you through setting it up in bridged mode.
