1) I have a super boot for my BIOS, so it remembers that last known good configuration, thus it does not have to restart the BIOS sequences everytime I turn my machine on or restart

2) I hibernate my OS, this way the OS does not have to reload everthing all over again.

My P4 system start up is now comparable to an Athlon FX (on a fresh boot), less than 30 seconds!

An Athlon FX CPU costs more than my entire rig, including the one in my sig.

Either way is OK. A lot depends on how you use it. If left on, it is almost mandatory to have it connected to a good UPS. In the summer I turn it off - the added heat is not appreciated. (It adds to the already stressed A/C load in Southern Arizona.) But - turning on and off is not really a problem. Sometimes leaving it on, you pick up all kinds of strange auto upgrade garbage if you are on broadband. Cold booting is often a good cure for minor ailments and lets you know more about your systems health.

When I am away from home, I always turn it off completely - even the cable modem.

Computers don't have combustion engines. Cold-booting doesn't damage them unless they've already got faulty components.

Yes I'm nice to my PC like that. The cat ,I guess, heard the fan and decided to play with it. Not sure what happened next but I know the cat was missing one claw and there was blood all over the damn carpet. I want to killed the cat but my wife likes her so the vet bill cost me $600 (for a damn $30 cat). After turning my computer back on (didn't remember turning it off) from coming home from the vet the cat would hide. I had no idea why but I don't care. Cars are stupid any way. I wanted a dog, but that another story. First you have to know I can't smell anything at all. My wife walks into the den and says it smell like I'm roasting a pig. I could semell but after look around I found the reason. It seems thier is cat blood all over my HS, and the smell is very bad ( from what I'm told). Well my computer is still working so I decide not to clean out anything. Plus he got the kill (really he just hurt ther cat, but I don't want to hurt his fellings) so he gets to wear the war paint. I now have the den to my self and the cat still will come upstairs if he can hear (or smell not sure which) the computer on.

Lesson for the day.
Sometimes a bloody mess is a good thing if it gets you your den back.
Also I get the real Killer PC, the rest of you guys PC are just want to be.

That's an awesome story!

Jesus christ! You are one cold hearted sob. YOU left the fan exposed and expect a cat not to stick its paws/face in? Thats borderline animal cruelty. And you get pissed at the cat? Whats wrong with you?

Obviously not, but when it is clearly your fault, I don't see how you can be pissed at the cat. After seeing what happened, most people would realize that it was their fault... instead of blaming the cat for causing a bill.

...although, yes, I'd be pissed if I had to pay 600 for my own stupidity.

You can't be seriously mad at me for the cat hurting herself on the computer fan.
Nothing against the cat lover, but damn its animal and a pretty usually one at that.
I'm not for animal cruelty but if a dog runs after a car and get hit its not the drivers fault.
All animal should have some survival sense and the first should be not to mess with stuff that can hurt you. Sorry but I'm dog lover and I would still be mad at one if he blooded up have my house. Damn animals lover are just insane. Next I'm can't leave my dog outside in the cold. YOu can child proof a home but the only way to cat proof one si to kick the damn cat out. Cats will climb anything and mess with anything. But no matter how stupid the animal is it didn't play with my big rotaty fan in the basement. Second a CPU fan is made of plastic you know how many time thet cat had to stick it paw into the fan to get hurt . My guess is damn lot. If animals are that stupid I say let it die. but I guess I'm just a SOB. It was child I would be very upset, but ITS A DAMN CAT.
Sorry get over it.

So your logic would say that idiot parents who leave guns out in their house are NOT the people to blame when their kid shoots himself playing with teh gun. It would be the childs fault????????

My cat loves to get into anything and everything she isn't suppose too. She's really like a two year old in that respect. I wouldn't leave my PC open with my cat around, because she would do something just that stupid. I usually just shut the computer room door when I'm working on something though.

Anyway, I shut off my PC whenever I'm not going to be using it for say, a half hour or more. With the amount of power an overclocked CPU draws I saw a noticable reduction in my electric bill when I took a more active approach to shutting down. (I used to only shut it off at night or while I was at work.)

I built an low power server (via c3, 1 hard disk, no drives, onboard video 110w PSU) to do my torrents, serve files, and be the printer server.

A gun is not caseless computer. If a child knocks over the same computer and some how dies should rthe partner go to jail. Hell no. And once again how are you comparing a damn cat to a child. People are cluess. I guess I will have to post this in general comments, just to piss these people off.

There's a fan in my system that acts up for a while when I first boot the system. Just because of that I usually leave it on, rebooting or maybe turning it off for a night and a day once a week or so.

You've given me some good ideas to "take care" of the wife's cat......I was just going to bury it up to its neck and run over it with the lawn mower but that seemed to obvious.

What's wrong wtih me? I'm sick and twisted and enjoying watching people get themselves worked up!

I leave mine on all the time. One of the arguments for this is thermal expansion from a 'cold' boot will strain the components more. I think it's not likely to do in your machine, but I just don't like waiting 30 seconds for my machine to boot in the morning, and I can leave stuff open.

I have a 8 year old gateway. I've leave it on all the time unless i'm gone for a week or more. I've never had any thing fail on it or gone bad. So personally leaveing it on might be better than turning it off every time your done.
