Best advice so far. You made the right decision. Forget about it. Other doors will open in the future and you may get exactly the position you want with an even higher pay scale!

Tough call, but I think you made the right choice.

My wife is a GS 9 step 5, it would be hard to justify the drop from an 11 to a 9, plus the promotion potential from an 11 is significantly greater, and within grade increases are larger.

FBI's going to be a bitch for some time, budget crunches are looming, and rolling everything (CIA, FBI, etc) under one head are going to be a real mess for years.

Strong work on the adoption too.

definitely agreed. you made a good decision. and doesn't the FBI have a requirement to contribute to 2 years of aggressive training in the middle of nowheresville?

You did well.

FBI is considered to be the redheaded step child of the intelligence community because of their incompentence and their air of "self-importance" when they really don't do much.

You would only get "respect" from your civilian friends who don't know anything if you were to go FBI.

Your job would not have much excitement despite what the movies tell you. Even the special agent jobs are boring filled with white collar crime and paperwork; hence the reason they get no respect from cops who see much more real action. You would be surrounded by fellow "wanna be cool agents" who are just posers.

If you do get a chance to go CIA though, that's a different story; take the paycut.

Well, after sleeping on it I've awoken with a different view on it all. I laid in bed last night and thought on it pretty hard and the advice most of you have given has been spot on. No sense dwelling on it.

I did torture myself some more last night though. There are several similar jobs at GS-11 or higher available, one of them in San Juan, Puerto Rico. My wife is Puerto Rican, so maybe one day....

You probably wouldn't look good in a black suit with white socks anyway.

Look at it this way, if they were interested enough to call you up after having applied a year ago, they may call you back in a few months or so with another opportunity that is much better :)

If they are as interested in you as you say, they won't let you go easy.

Well, I pissed away your chance today man, sorry. At least they liked my MP experience coupled with my computer knowledge, so you might have a good chance. Hell, I don't even have a degree or a cert in it, so come back with a degree and you'll be golden. Just remember to apply a year before you actually get the offer.

You gotta be kidding me, you were an MP? I'll have 3 years of active MP duty under my belt (well, in 2 years I will), then I go straight to school for comp science.

Is that some kind of sly Puerto Rican joke? Puerto Ricans don't wear socks usually and if they do, they're typically not white anyway. ;)

Oh, and I'm not Puerto Rican and my socks always coordinate with my slacks which coordinate with my shoes which coordinate with my belt. I know how to dress myself damnit! :D

LOL, Puerto Rico??

It's an old Biker Joke. You could always pick an FBI agent out of the crowd because they wore white socks with their black suits.

I dont know what to tell you , but after Listening to 'Money Talk 'on talk radio a time or two , the pensions these fed employees get blow me away . 90k a year retired, not counting your 401 k is very rare in Corp America , unless you are a Director or Company officer . Get the big picture , like where you will be 30+ years down the road .

I think women find it HAWT when they have FBI agents as their spouse. I think they find it erotic... sort of like having a secret agent (James Bond, True Lies, etc) husband.

I have a friend in the FBI as a special agent. Used to work in corporate america till he got bored and tried out for the FBI. It took a long time but he passed all their tests and stuff and got into the academy. Went through the academy easily (to him, would be hell for me) and now is an agent. He loves it although there is a lot of paperwork he said.

Not sure what their non-special agent jobs are like. Probably a lot like any other government job I'd suspect.

I've been very tempted to fill out an application. I've talked to a few agents about it. The problem is an initial pay cut and that I have to move. Keeps me from even applying.

My current job is kind of boring, though... I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. The guys I've talked to said an FBI job can be just as boring as any other.

no need to explain, WV is not a place anyone would want to relocate just to work.
