Turn your PC into a Dreamcast

damn, its about time someone shoulda have came out with something like this! nice find LXi. only if they could keep the price within the affordable range...

Yeah - I'm sure it'll be cheaper by a bundle since they won't have to buy the cd equipment. But I always thought that regular cd roms couldn't read the gdroms.

"According to this IGN report, Sega hopes to take the Dreamcast places no console has dared venture into- inside the PC."

This was actually done several years ago by Creative Labs with the 3DO. They had an add in card that had the 3DO hardware built onto it so you could play the games on your PC.

Still pretty cool though.

Emulation boards..... wow... does anyone else remember these things.... Remember the IBM emulation board you could buy for your Amiga, or the Apple II emulation board you could buy for you IBM... man these things go way back... to bad we don't have enough slots in our computers to begin with, let alone start piling up emulation boards.... They really need a better system to allow more expansion in computers...

If this pci card enables a regular cd rom to read dreamcast games, wouldn't it make it possible to copy them (the ones that are small enough to fit on a cd)?

Maybe if Sega had any good games I might have bought this. When I bought the DC 2 dayz after it was released I was excited, then after a week I didn't pick up the controller again.. Still sitsin my room collectin dust . Oh well, the X-Box is out in another ear or so..

this is a really good idea, it just isn't gonig to be out anytime before the x-box, which will be the greatest thing since sliced bread😀

im betting theyll just release a special gdrom enabled cd drive with the dc tech built in there in order to get around that piracy problem.

Sure, and I just got a Dreamcast too(at least I got it for a good price from a friend). About the Xbox....I'm not sure how dominant it will be, technology wise. I know it will have the most developer support, but....originally, i thought it wouldn't be good graphics wise, because generally console parts are much faster than PC parts clock for clock, and Xbox is PC parts....then I remembered that Dreamcast uses the PowerVR2, which is a PC part that is slower than todays accelerators, yet Dreamcast has better graphics than most PC games, so I thought Xbox would be really dominant....then I remembered that Dreamcast only runs at 640x480, so I'm not really sure....It'll probably wreck the PS2, but it will probably be stacked up really well against the Gamecube. It all comes down to games really...Nintendo has excellent 1st and 2nd party developers, but I'm sure Microsoft can get alot of very good 3rd party....hmm....lol sorry I got a little off topic 🙂

CrashX - nice call

What they should do is have the Xbox have a module where you can do he same. Now THAT would rule 🙂

"There are no good games on the Dreamcast"

wtf are you talking about?? Virtua Tennis, Powerstone 2?? have you played either of these games??? they are incredibly addictive when player with your buddies and they are fun as hell. Other games that rock are nba 2k1 and nfl 2k1, you can play these babies on SEGANET too!!

This is obviously a marketing plot by Sega. My ideas on this are as fallows. Sega lowered the price of their Dreamcast unit to $150 US right before the PS2 launch. How much did this help? Not that good as I see it, because when the Dreamcast was first released, all of the die hard Sega fans ran out and grabbed one, but now (in the first weeks of the PS2 launch), you have heard nothing of the dropped price. As for the X-Box. Sega is again trying to steal some of the spotlight away from Microsoft, in TWO ways. 1) I am sure we have all read about the DVD player add-on that is coming for the Dreamcast. When? Probably around fall 2001. 2) Now a PCI card that will allow Dreamcast games to be played on a PC. When? Probably around fall 2001. 3) And finally the X-Box. When? Around fall 2001. And why are they targeting the PC Gamer with #2 on my list? Of course this is because the X-Box is so related to the PC. So, as you can see, I am sure that this is just another marketing scheme to steal some of the spotlight from Microsoft. Personally I hope the X-Box falls and burns, because I don't ever want to lose my PC games...

Beast1284:

Your ideas are interesting, but really, I really like Dreamcast and has been considering buying one, but now there is this PCI card, seems like the perfect thing I am looking for.
