How?

I can pause for up to 5 weeks, but no longer.

I will update when I want to, not when they want me to.

If you find a forum thread on "Microsoft Ignite" on this topic, it ends with a statement of the Microsoft Terms of Use and Licensing Agreement, which notes that you can postpone updates, but only as long as MS allows. Further, if you "find a way" or use some third party software to circumvent updates, you will be in violation of Licensing Terms.

Right now, all my Win 11 Pro machines are working just fine. I haven't even thought about stopping updates -- only postponing them. But the writing on the wall tells me "We're all F***ed NOW!! . . . . "

This has been creeping up on us since the days of Windows 95, or so I imagine. Everyone was too busy to notice? Maybe I just didn't notice that people had noticed!

Some bad news.

Ya, I got updates paused too, but MS has got control of your machine, at least if/when you are online.

From time to time while on line my machine will pause for a significant time on webpage accessing, then when the machine is being shutdown or rebooting, it is clear something is getting installed (eg, the shutdown or boot up is being abnormally delayed/extended).

Clearly MS is also pushing update notifications. For example. while I was trying to access this thread, I noticed a web access delay, then (because of this thread) I checked my updates section.

I then observed a notification about a KB security related update that wasnt there days before (my updates are disabled till 11/19). Here's copy of the notification line:

"Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Version 1.439.293.0) - Current Channel (Broad)"

So no doubt about it, MS pretty much can do whatever they want to your machine whenever they want whether you like it or care for it or not.

Good luck

Not sure on this, but you may be able to disable automatic updates with GPE? If you really want to.

I imagine that disabling the BITS, Windows Update and Delivery Optimisation services might be enough to stop WU entirely.

I have a vague memory though that I was once trying to temporarily stop WU from running on a bandwidth-starved machine and Windows started a disabled service anyway. I don't remember the details, but I do remember making a thread about it on this forum.

It isn't so much the updates themselves. It's the forced reboots. I try to run a month at a time, rebooting on the 1st.

My other problems don't get the message to save before shutdown, so I end up have to potentially do recoveries on LibreOffice and others.

I try to do routine saves when I change something, or at least once every couple of days. But there are still times that an unexpected forced reboot can cause issues.
