In the summertime, it bothers me, but this time of year, we need to heat our house.
So, that $67.50 "wasted" on electricity to keep the lights on really just goes to heat the house.

Ditto for my computer.

btw, yeah, I think I've seen bulbs for 75 cents each, but seriously, does anyone actually pay that price for them? They seem to be on sale for 4 for a dollar about 9 out of every 10 weeks. We've been gradually switching to compact fluorescent bulbs, but a couple weeks ago, they actually had regular bulbs 4 4-packs for $1. (6-7 cents each)

Every time I need bulbs, which is frequently around this damn place, they're 25 cents each or more. Not expensive in itself, but the bulbs, along with the electricity do add up over time. Wouldn't bother me at all if the lights were being used, but so many times, they aren't. Just burning away all day long with nobody even home. Guess that makes sense to some people though...

OK, answer this:
  • Are your lights on in the basement?don't have one
  • Are they on in your garage?don't have one
  • Are they on in your closets?lights in the closets? You can afford it
  • In your bathroom?just checked, yup
  • Are they all on when you're not home?sometimes, if i leave in a hurry
  • Are they on day and night, everyday? sometimes
Most importantly, if you answered no to any of those questions, then WHY NOT?[/quote]

Chill dude, they're just lights. Either you're anal, or you are misdirecting aggression towards your mother at your wife.

She's absentminded about this thing. My guess is she is that way about other things. Short of shock therapy, she's not gonna change. She's your wife, man. Get over it, or leave her. Your choice.

The post you quoted wasn't asked of my wife, and the people it was directed to, haven't answered any of the questions. Why is that?

Oh, BTW, why do you ever bother to turn yours off at all? Why not just leave 'em all on 24-7?

Flourescent lamps and fixtures should not be constantly cycled on and off. The cycles wear the bulbs out in itself, and flourescent lamps require more startup current to ignite the lamp, so it does take more energy to start them then to just leave them on.

while the 2nd part is true, that depends on the duration that you're leaving them on. But for the most part, it's a myth about leaving them on saves a significant amount. It takes more energy to leave them on for any duration over a few seconds.
