Turn Signals...

I feel like people who don't use them feel like they have a right to do whatever they like without regard for anyone else on the road. It's the attitude that bothers me the most. Yes, I get all that from people just not using turn signals. They're too good for them.

I don't usually signal when changing lanes because at least half the time some asshole will speed up to close the gap so I can't get over.

I signal when actually making a turn because I want to alert the drivers behind me so they don't rear-end me when I slow down.

So if you're on a 3-lane highway and you're changing from right to middle.. the guy in the left lane signaling into the middle is supposed to guess when you're going to do that?

I don't know which bothers me the most...idiots who don't use their turn signals, or idiots who drive for miles and miles with the turn signal flashing. In trucks, it's a bit different, as often, the only indicator in the cab is in the signal lever itself and they're not self-cancelling after a turn,

Or they're just lazy. I've been in situations, usually in the springtime when everyone has their windows or tops down, to say calmly to another driver who should have signaled their intentions "a blinker would have been nice". The look on their face is usually priceless. They think they're still in their bubble. Some are agitated that their phone conversation has been interrupted.

For some reason, I lose respect for the driver of the vehicle that leaves the blinker on. After many minutes, if the driver is conscious and looking around, you'd think they'd notice. There is usually a visual indication of this on the dash. In my '00 chevy truck, the blinker is not self-canceling. It does make a repeating ding sound that can't be heard if the window is open or the radio is on - at least, that's what I hear happens...
 
One thing I'm curious about what people think....

We have these on-ramps and off-ramps here that are connected by their own lane. Meaning that the road is normally two lanes in each direction and when an off-ramp for the expressway comes up, it will usually connect to an on-ramp.

Here's a google maps satellite image:

If take the off-ramp and intend to then take the same on-ramp that you're currently headed toward, would you still signal to the right? Personally, I do not signal to the right, because I am not switching lanes. The only reason I could see signal is because a driver might expect that you intend to merge to the left but are a punk that doesn't use your signal, but this is not required by law as you are not turning onto a new road/path/direction nor are you changing lanes.
 
I hate the normal-driving folks that fail to use turn signals. So you're doing 40mph and they turn last second without signaling... That's a lot worse than the 10mph idiots that don't know where they're going....you have a little more time to react. Those that are going a moderate speed, but just under the limit cause the most accidents from their idiocy.

I didn't look at the image, but if you're merging, you're using a turn signal to make sure the guy behind you is aware you're about to cut him off. That's the whole point - to warn people. It doesn't matter if they're supposed to know / expect it. Your signals are used for both party's safety. Don't do it just because of laws.

That's generally what I think angers most people. It kind of gives off a pompous attitude which people don't take kindly to.

I agree with everyone here that signaling is excellent and everyone should do it and if everyone did it properly it makes the road much safer. Although generally I won't signal in a standard merge (an on-ramp to a highway for example), as it's explicitly implied.

HOWEVER, I also have a problem with people thinking that blinker on = complete freedom to go wherever.

For every douchebag who goes back and forth between lanes without a blinker, there's another douchebag who will put on the blinker and just proceed to force his/her way into wherever regardless of whether or not it's safe.

Blinker = intent of motion not right of passage.

I'm not merging that's the thing. We have connected off ramps and on ramps here and that connected portion is almost like a 3rd lane. Well, typically I'll get off 17E and stay in the off ramp/on ramp lane and go down to 434E. The thing is, since some drivers are crappy, they never signal when they merge onto 26N (i.e. out of the off ramp on ramp lane), so I've noticed that some drivers will signal to the right even though they're not really changing lanes or anything. I don't do this because I am not doing anything. I do however, signal to the right to take 434E, because I'm in the right-most lane and another lane opens up to the right of that for east-bound traffic where there's a stop light ahead to access 434W.

What I'm wondering is would it be better to signal to the right to show that I do not intend on leaving the lane? Technically there's no law that says I have to as signals are not meant to show intent on not leaving a lane 😛.

Naw. If you signal for a lane change on a busy LA freeway, chances are (more often than not) someone will close the gap instead of let you in.

if i'm in an exit only lane and there is someone in my blind spot, i usually signal in the direction of the exit anyway.
you don't have to do that, but i do it anyway so the car next to me knows i'm not one of those "crapi'minanexitlaneanddidn'tmeantobe" dillweeds that veers back onto the freeway across the debris-filled triangle.

Although I'm usually driving like I'm fucking Mario Andretti, people riding with me always get 😕 when I signal or follow some other rule of the road, like yield signs... These douchebags also drive around in the rain with no lights, 90 in a crowded 55, etc. It's always best to just roll your eyes and ignore it; if I let half the shit I saw on the road get to me (I shit you not, there was a period of time where I couldn't get in my car without nearly getting in at least one accident before reaching my destination) what with all the geezers and dumb bitches on their phones on the road, I'd probably kill myself.

Not to stereotype either, but from my own evidence, the only "dick" things I've ever seen a male driver do that wasn't old to the point of it impairing their driving, was cut me off. The teenaged girls and the soccermoms are the ones doing all the stupid shit like merging into my lane and forcing me off the road, completely missing the concept of getting onto a highway where traffic is going 70 MPH (HINT: ACCELERATE TO AT LEAST FUCKING 70 MILES PER HOUR).

I fit right in with drivers in places that aren't Florida. Chicago was remarkably easy to drive in; some inconsiderate bastards, but nothing life threating like the dipshits in Florida. California just puzzled me, nobody, NOBODY, regardless of age, race, gender, penis or boob size, can merge onto the fucking highway. No one.
 
People who treat stop signs like yield signs. See it all the time when they see me coming up on the intersection they're supposed to stop at.
