turn right from left hand right hand turn lane?

Is it legal to turn right when the light is red from the left hand right hand turn lane? Or just the one closest to the curb? 😕

I wouldn't do it. As a general rule, if you have to cross a lane of traffic to make the turn, it's illegal against a light. As that lane would turn into the second lane of the street you are turning onto and not the curbside lane, you'd be crossing a lane of traffic. That's a no-no. You may squeak by on a technicality, but if a cop saw you, you'd have about a 75% chance of getting pulled over.

The only way that would be legal was if there were signs that indicate that the second lane was allowed to turn right too.

I was able to answer your question by looking at your drawing. If I would have only gone from your post, my head would have exploded.

I know, I don't understand my post either 😕

I'd never really thought about it (never encountered that situation, myself), but there are some intersections in my city that are marked with "NO TURN ON RED EXCEPT CURB LANE"... so would that imply that it's OK to turn right in non-curb lanes unless so indicated?

I suppose I could look it up in code, but I'm not quite that motivated.

only allowed if that lane has a right turn arrow marking on it i'd say

for example near my house from the HW we have a exit that gets onto the road like this

L R R

I use the middle lane and turn right on red's if its clear

Around here, all intersections like that have a sign specifically indicating that the lane you are refering to *cannot* turn on a red light, but that the curb lane can. I would tend to assume that is a general rule.

I would have to believe if it was a two-way 4-lane road then that would be a legitimate turn as long as that center lane would turn towards the line closest to the center IF THE LIGHT WAS GREEN. Otherwise, I'd believe the curb could only do that.

But then again, I'm not sure either 🙂.

What did the cop say after he pulled you over?

OK, I lied... I was motivated to look it up, for Ohio at least.

Ohio Revised Code section 4511.13(C):

(C) Steady red indication:

(1) Vehicular traffic, streetcars, and trackless trolleys facing a steady red signal alone shall stop at a clearly marked stop line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection, or if none, then before entering the intersection and shall remain standing until an indication to proceed is shown except as provided in divisions (C)(2) and (3) of this section.

(2) Unless a sign is in place prohibiting a right turn as provided in division (C)(5) of this section, vehicular traffic, streetcars, and trackless trolleys facing a steady red signal may cautiously enter the intersection to make a right turn after stopping as required by division (C)(1) of this section. Such vehicular traffic, streetcars, and trackless trolleys shall yield the right-of-way to pedestrians lawfully within an adjacent crosswalk and to other traffic lawfully using the intersection.

(3) Unless a sign is in place prohibiting a left turn as provided in division (C)(5) of this section, vehicular traffic, streetcars, and trackless trolleys facing a steady red signal on a one-way street that intersects another one-way street on which traffic moves to the left may cautiously enter the intersection to make a left turn into the one-way street after stopping as required by division (C)(1) of this section, and yielding the right-of-way to pedestrians lawfully within an adjacent crosswalk and to other traffic lawfully using the intersection.

I interpret that (as does the official Ohio Digest, I believe) to indicate that your questioned turn would be permitted, as long as not otherwise indicated for that intersection.

I'm not going to look it up for California though, do it yourself. 😛

It's usually printed that it is illegal, that's why I never go into that lane. I turn right while other people sit there at the light waiting.

I didnt get pulled over, but I have seen a few people turn right from a left hand right hand turn lane in the past couple of weeks and it made me 😕 because I didn't think it was legal.

In California it is LEGAL unless there is a sign saying it isn't or there is a red arrow. If the red light is an arrow no lane can turn.

It's legal. There's an intersection that looks just like near the Colma Costco between Jack in the Box and Carl's Jr. There are always douchebags who wait for the light to turn green before they make the turn. Fail.

i think it is usually illegal, as people in that lane would block the vision of the far right lane when trying to make their turn. around here it is usually explicitly stated - no right on red from second lane.

legal.

signs are usually up for exceptions rather than general rules. that's why a few intersections have "no right on red" signs rather than most having "okay to turn right whenever" signs.

Actually signs are also often up to clarify a law, or to remind drivers of the law. There is an intersection with a red right arrow here with a sign that says "No turn on red", which isn't an exception because you can never turn against a red arrow in California. This sign reminds drivers of the law, not an exception to it.

i knew i should have bolded "usually" 😉

I'm pretty sure it's legal as long as all lanes to your right are right turn only lanes. People here do it all the time and will lay on the horn if you don't
