Turn on Problem

My computer will not start up using the on off switch. If I unplug and depower the MOBO then repower and press the on button, it starts normally. Once on, I can restart the machine through windows using control/alt/del and it restarts just fine, but once I shutdown using the start menu, I have to unplug the machine before it will restart normally using the on button. I get the feeling that this is a motherboard issue, but was wondering if it could be some sort of boot virus problem? What do you think?

I'd bet it's not a boot virus - before we go further though - I'm going to hazard a guess and say the MOB is your motherboard?

Yes the MOB is my motherboard. Guess MOBO would have been a better choice!

What type of rig are you using? What OS? When you say you have to unplug the motherboard and repower it - do you mean the PSU? More info is needed.

However at the moment, I'd hazard a guess at a faulty on/off switch, a grounded motherboard or a bad PSU.

I unplug the power cord from the power supply, or cycle the power supply on-off switch, then press the on button to get the machine to start up.

Sounds like the power supply is going bad, hence the reason you have to let if fully dissapate power before it works again. If not the power supply, then it's the motherboard. But i'd definitely try to find another power supply to test with first.

I'd need a more knowledgeable opinion on that but it sounds like it could be a bad cap on the mobo or processor. For sure try a new PSU and while you're in there, look around on your motherboard for any blown or bulging capacitors.

Since i've made my living working on computers for 10 years, i'd say i'm a knowledgeable opinion on the matter. Only a motherboard or power supply usually causes these symptoms.

Thanks for all the input. I have tried a NEW POWER SUPPLY and the problem is now gone. Shared knowledge is great, and I would like to thank all who gave of their time and knowledge. YOU ALL ROCK!

yeah the PSU was the problem. the reset signal wasn't getting through. possibly a bad cap in the PSU too. glad you fixed it.
