Turn Off Windows Update In Windows 10?

Y'all must have been hiding under a rock. At this time, Microsoft has committed to enforcing an Auto-Update system. If you have a Pro, Education, or Enterprise version, you can pause updates for a short period of time. You cannot disable them, and if you attempt to disable basic updates, you'll be cut off from all Security Updates. Which, I might add, is a terrible idea. Having some way of disabling feature updates or random bug fixes, but leaving Security Updates enabled, would be a very nice compromise from Microsoft. They are, and for the foreseeable future will be, getting a lot of flak from this new policy, as some updates have basically crashed the system. When they are auto-enforced, that is not good at all. I admire their approach and think there is a lot of value to be gained from this, but they should modify it some. Auto security updates are a good thing, because even if they create bugs, that definitely closes up major backdoors that open up a large number of computers to nefarious users. The fewer and less widespread they remain, the better for everyone.

You can still stop and disable the service, but that will stop all updates from coming in. But those who would like to see feedback on updates before letting them install may want to do it this way.

Poor Soul why did you elect to go to WinX over Win7 or 8 before listening to your peers?

I'm still running Win7 64-Bit SP1 and refuse to giver her up unit I get the whole low down on WinX and it may take a year or 2 from now.

By then my hardware will be outdated or I'll be dead - LOL

If One has Win 10 Pro there is a way to configure to at least be informed about the Updates coming.

Looks like Microsoft nuked it. I have Pro and just tried it. Set it to notify only as shown then rebooted. When I went to settings > windows update it found 2 and automatically downloaded and installed them. I hate auto updates as they tend to cause issues. Stupid stuff like IE lagging, crashing, etc till the next reboot.

If you don't want auto updates then don't install 10. I don't really understand why anyone wouldn't want updates, 10 is pretty raw still, needs all the updates it can get.

I manually check for updates daily in the store/windows update hoping another bug will be squashed. Mail app has finally become usable after several updates for example.

If you have the Pro version, you can turn-off Auto Updates with Group Policy. To do so, run gpedit.msc then go to Computer Config, Admin Templates, Windows Components, Windows Update. On the right side, select "Configure Auto Update" and set to disabled.

I disabled mine a couple of months ago and I have to click on "Check for Updates" to receive any updates. I still update regularly but now I select when to update rather than letting Windows decide. I have set Win Update this way for as long as I can remember. I used to get annoyed when Windows and other auto updaters wanted to download something when I was in the middle of doing something else on the computer.

.......
I prefer other people be the guinea pigs before downloading updates.

Alright, there is risk of updating the system, and there is risk of not updating either... but worst scenario for Microsoft is making sure that every individual update works with or without hundreds of others. This way, at least everybody is on the same page.

OSX did this for a while. Every update changes OS version by 0.0.1

I am going to uninstall win 10 and return to win 7 again. As i have not find any solution of this on internet. May be in future, a solution may come

I'm trying this approach now. I keep updated also but would prefer it done when I want. Not like it happens all the time but some updates seem to slow rig down til a reboot.

The only problem with this approach is that you still can't choose what updates to install. I hate that.

Can you use WSUS or that autopatcher thing (no idea how it works) to filter updates? Pretty ridiculous to even suggest but here we are.

There's a thread in the HTPC area about installing WMC on Win 10 and that MS will not update Win 10 systems with WMC installed.

Install WMC = Block Updates
Remove WMC = Updates Install

If this is true then Microsoft may have inadvertently provided a way for users to control updates...lol!

You need a server to even attempt that, but I am curious how it works with Windows 10 Pro as opposed to Enterprise.

Why block win 10 updates when updates to win 10 make it better and more stable as time goes on? I understand updates for 7 and 8.1 are buggy and weird but I work in tech support and I have yet to see win 10 updates cause any problem. Plenty in win 7 and 8.1 but not in 10.

Personally I'd rather initiate the update process when it's convenient for me. Not like I'm not gonna update. Just would rather do it when I'm done doing what I was doing. Feel it's safer to update when rig is just idling away, less chances of update going bad.

When the updates are ready, Microsoft asks you when you want to apply them (reboot). Just select a date and time. So it sounds like it does exactly what you want.

The only thing I don't like about the new Windows Update process is that it should have been done years ago. I have repaired far to may computers running Windows 7 and older (not so much repairing the past few years) that are way behind on updates. Considering that the vast majority of Windows Updates are security updates, it makes sense that MS should be taking extra steps to ensure that these do get applied.
