So, you know how the screen goes into standby/whatever whenever it doesn't receive a signal from the computer or your computer does the power management thing? Is there anyway to do that with a bat file or something? I run a bat file and then my screen goes, "I am now in power saving mode."

Sounds weird, but I want to do this because I don't actually have a button on my screen to turn it off. Taking the power cord out and plugging it back in is a PITA.

I've also noticed that my screen turns on randomly. No apparent freaking reason. Nothing is running. Nothing is moving. My only assumption is my mouse is glitching it by moving just a pixel. Is there anyway to fix that? Make it so that it only turns on if you move the equivalent of 100pixels?
 
Do you have "wake on lan" turned off? It took me awhile to realize internet activity was turning on my monitor. >.<
 
You can manually put your monitor to sleep as follows:

1. Right click desktop
2. Select PROPERTIES
3. Select Screen Saver tab
4. Select BLANK
5. Press PREVIEW

Your monitor will go blank and stay that way until you hit a key or jiggle the mouse.

Is blank off though? I haven't run Windows in awhile, and never used that. In Linux, "blank" means the lights are on, but all the pixels are black. Dumbest thing in the world tbh :^/

Clarification... That should be Gnome, not Linux. Other screensavers may operate differently.

NirCmd is a command line utility that can do many, many things including what you just mentioned. Unzip the nircmd.exe file and put it somewhere, then create a batch file that runs in that directory, and have it run the command "nircmd.exe monitor off". Then when you double click the batch file, your monitor turns off...bingo. You could also set up a shortcut to the batch file that can be activated by a certain keystroke sequence.
 
In XP, Start > Standby. In Win 7, Start > Shut Down > Sleep. But, that is the entire system - not just the monitor. A good, easy hardware solution is to plug your monitor into a power strip/box that has a switch, and just turn it off. That is really better than sleep.
