Turn-By-Turn Voice Navigation Comes to Jailbroken iPhones

I'll give it a go..... I have nav built into my car so its of limited use to me, but still wouldn't mind having it at all.

I also have it in my car, but it would come in handy when I'm away, or riding with friends.

I downloaded it, but it doesn't have voice yet. It's supposed to be added in the next version, which is due next week.

Does anyone know why such an app hasn't hit the App Store? I would have thought someone like TomTom or Garmin would have been chomping at the bit to get an app like that out.

Currently the official SDK prohibits turn by turn GPS nav. Apparently TomTom had something running on an iPhone (maybe just the simulator) some time back but it would never get through the submission process.

Has anyone ever said why this is prohibited? It makes no sense to me. This would immediately be the best-selling expensive app in the entire App Store. They could charge $30-50 for it and many people would still buy.

1. Possibly liability issues?
2. Maybe they have a non-competing clause with someone somewhere (although I can't imagine why).
3. Maybe apple wants to make it themselves and do it well.

No, they have never said why or why not. Apple may be coming up with their own solution, and doesn't want competition. I used to have a Samsung M610 which I loaded Garmin on and it worked just fine. Plus all the major carriers have their own ridiculously expensive "GPS services" so I doubt its liability.

I use it, but for some reason I can only get directions when in WiFi. In 3G, I cannot get directions. So I always need to set up my directions at home or at a Starbucks.

I agree. Hopefully something "official" in the near future.

I'm betting Apple has something up its sleeve with regards to turn-by-turn nav; I can't see why the SDK would otherwise prohibit it.

Actually, there's already a turn-by-turn GPS available for the iPhone... link.
The lack of voice instructions really doesn't do you much good.

I found this out yesterday, when I tried it. That makes this app a total waste of space for me.

It's ok but it is useless IMO

It doesn't tell you "stay in the right lane" or "exit on the left"

What about re-routing?
Stupid Apple needs to allow Garmin or Tom Tom to release a navigation

Still ill download this in case of emergencies but I wouldnt make it my #1 navigation
