Turn based strategy games?

I've always really enjoyed the Heroes of Might and Magic series of games and Kings Bounty before that on my Sega Genesis. :) I've pretty well played all the maps in HOMM5 now and probably going to pick up the expansion sometime today. Eventually I'll run out of maps again and need to get my fix for strategy games.

So, knowing I really, really like HOMM5 can you tell me what other games that are somewhat similar in style that I might enjoy? I've played the other HOMM games and also enjoy (though not turn based) C&C / Red Alert. But I'm hoping there are more games that are turn based that you guys could recommend.

Thanks in advance for any opinions!

If you haven't played the oldschool TBS games you should give them a try. MoO2 and MoM would be my recommendations. Also, you could play the original HoMM with the pink dragons and hamburgerlars.

Yeah, qft... moo2...what a great game.

What's MoM?
It reminded me of the original Might and Magic series. That is sort of turn based, 6 is anyway
Epic game. 7 too. RPGs, but there's plenty of strategy involved.

The original Homm rocked too. That is to say HoMM3.

Age of Wonders was great, so was the Warlords series, 3 in particular.

I Google'd MoO2 and get Master of Orion? That the game you're suggesting?

I'll probably look into it, I don't mind older games at all, I have a laptop with a Radeon x300 that I play HOMM2/3 on as well as Red Alert, this game would probably do ok on that.

Thanks for the suggestion, looks like another older one to look into for the laptop. Looks kind of RPG-ish and HOMM2-ish.

Thanks! I remembered they launched that game a little while back, but when I went to Best Buy they didn't have it in stock. Since than I pretty much forgot it existed.

MoM is Master of Magic it's kind of like Civ1 with magicians and tactical combat. It's completely different from plain Might and Magic. Stardock is going to be publishing a spiritual successor to it called elemental or something might be worth watching for too.

HoMM1 was decent HoMM2 was really good. Not to say HoMM3 wasn't better.

Age of Wonders is pretty good, but if thats the style of play you want I'd recommend Disciples 2 instead. You can find the gold edition at Target, on their bargain shelf next to Civilization 3.

Elemental is coming out soon, and it will be similar to Master of Magic. (It was originally being created as MoM 2, but Stardock was unable to get the license; so they are creating their own game now)

It should be like HoMM with more depth. HoMM was based off of MoM anyway, so it may be what you are looking for, but the open Beta got pushed back and won't happen until next month at least.

MoO2 (master of Orion) is a very good game. It's fun and can be challenging depending on how you play etc. However MoO3 is terrible! dont even bother with it.

I  MoM, been playing it since it came out, so I have high hopes.

I think my all-time favorite turn-based strategy game is Panzer General. PG2 was good too, but I still go back and play PG via DOSbox now and then.

QFT.

I spent waaay too many hours in college playing MoM and MoO (original was the best of the series IMO). The whole concept of two separate but connected planes in MoM - wow, let's just say it was very well done and has not been replicated that I'm aware of. The whole game was just awesome.

I hadn't heard of Elemental but now will certainly watch for it.

If you like turn based fantasy, then you will nerdgasm over Kings Bounty, the Legend.

For sci-fi turn based:
Galactic Civilizations 2 - try the demo
Sword of the Stars series - try the demo
UFO: Extraterrestrials - modern xcom ripoff, be sure to install user made mods to make it playable.

All of the above games are downloadable and relatively cheap.

Check www.gamersgate.com, www.steampowered.com, and www.impulsedriven.com

If you want to delve into the world of hardcore turn based fantasy, try out the demo for Dominions 3. Wikipedia entry here. Insane.

Sorry forgot to mention:

Fantasy Wars
Fantasy Wars: Elven Legacy

Pretty graphics, reasonably well done turn based strategy.

Also: Battle for Wesnoth is free turnbased old school tactical fantasy. Its really quite decent. Website is www.wesnoth.org

Legendary game, just fantastic though I was too young to really enjoy it to its full.

The Sci-Fi version you are thinking of was Battle Isle (probably 2 specifically)

My favorite turn based strat game was Jagged Alliance 2. Not a typical 'turn based' game in the sense of Civ, but squad based fun with hilarious voice content and nice headshots :)

Did anyone get to try out the Short Lived Everquest strategy game they made for like 6 months? I never got to try it as I could never find it in stores and it just dissapeared. Was it any good?

If you want a sci-fi based game from a small game developer, check out Space Empires V.
