I'm looking for some good turn based war strategy games like Panzer General, but I haven't seen any new ones that have been released lately. Most of the new war games are first person shooters like Battlefield 2 or RTS games like Company Of Heroes, which really aren't my genre anymore. Sure, these games are fun, but they seem to rely more on quick reflexes and fast hardware than any real strategy, especially when playing them in multiplayer mode.

If anyone has any good suggestions, let me know...

Well, if you had a Nintendo DS there's the Advance Wars series. And Panzer Tactics DS comes out soon. :) There's also the tactical RPG genre, which is pretty similar to what you're looking for with the addition of RPG elements and generally different themes.

I don't know of anything for PC though.

Galactic Civilizations 2, and Space Empires 5 are out if you like space strategy games. If you can find it in the bargain bin, check out Shattered Union. Like Panzer General with modern weapons. Not as good as PG though.

Then there's War in the Pacific, but even i'm afraid to try that game.

MOO 2, Civ 2, Xcom: Enemy Unknown > *

But, modern ones go...... Civ IV is the best you are going to get and it is not even as good as SMAC.

Ever played Jagged Alliance 2? (Squad-level, with resource and RPG elements). There is also an Urban Chaos total conversion for it (free) that re-works the weapons and changes all of the maps.

Fallout Tactics was fun if you like a mix of conventional and SF weapons.

Silent Storm isn't as good as JA2 but has better graphics.

Why is everyone saying MOO 2?? Master of Orion was the best turn based game EVER. You just need to download DosBox in order to run it. Heck, the game is available here and the guide for in game when you need to identify the ships is here. It doesn't get any easier then that

M.A.X. is still my favorite. Hearts of Iron if your feelin like spending an eternity on a game.

Heroes of Might and Magic V/And the expansion has been out for a while

Another vote for Silent Storm as well.

JA2 is so good. I pick it up once or twice a year with a new objective. A guy I knew picked the goal of developing Ira and Shank (among the worst mercs in the game, but very cheap) into good mercs. I'm currently playing through with an Expert Throwing personal merc - at night, he can clear entire sectors silently.

The Wikipedia article mentions JA3. Unfortunately, it seems that there are problems with its development.

While they are not exactly new you may want to find a copy of Combat Mission. There are 3 seperate titles in the series. Beyond Overlord is the origianl and covers from '44 to the end of the war on the west front. Africa Corp covers the desert war and Barbarossa to Berlin covers the East Front. They are no your typical turn based (but they are turn based) game. Each player plots moves for his forces then the compter creates a 1 min movie which each player watches, seeing only the forces visisble to his units. It is all played on a 3-d battle field, with infantry squads and individual tanks and a specturm of other vechicals.

Give them a look if you are a serious WWII gamer.
